COVID-19 Health & Safety Plan

CPS is doing everything it can to create SAFE environments for students and staff. In addition to monitoring public health metrics to inform the decision to open buildings, CPS is taking a number of proactive steps which are outlined in the Safety & Facilities Procedures Manual.

Before October 13, when some students will begin in-person learning, more information will be shared to help families understand and talk with their children about safety procedures, including a video library.

In the meantime, check out:

Daily Health Checklist: Before entering a building for work, school, or an appointment, students and staff should review the daily health checklist.

COVID-19 Testing: In partnership with the City of Cambridge and the Cambridge Public Health Department, CPS has established a comprehensive testing system:

  • Optional, free testing for all staff in CPS buildings, up to twice weekly
  • Testing for symptomatic students and staff in CPS buildings
  • Additional health aides for every school

School/Classroom Setup: CPS buildings and classrooms are setup to support social distancing and frequent hand-washing:

  • Desks & tables spaced 6 feet apart, with 10 to 12 students in a typical classroom
  • Sinks or additional sanitizer if no sink. Additional sinks installed in school common areas.
  • Virus shields placed in some high traffic areas
  • “Get Well” rooms in every building, for students who demonstrate symptoms

Air Quality: With the assistance of an engineering firm, CPS has reviewed and improved air ventilation quality:

  • CO2 meters in all buildings to check air quality
  • HEPA Air scrubbers to clean air in under ventilated areas
  • Window box fans to circulate fresh air
  • Each classroom has at least one easily operable window
  • Spaces without direct ventilation will not be used

Masks, Face Shields, Gloves: CPS has ordered an abundance of personal protective equipment.

  • CPS has ordered 230,000 masks; 3,000 child-size and 2,000 adult-size face shields; 1,000,000 pairs of gloves, and has goggles and coveralls for those who may need it
  • While staff & families may use the mask they prefer if an abundance of masks are available for all staff

Cleaning: CPS has strengthened its cleaning and disinfecting routines.

  • Additional custodial staff being allocated for daily cleaning & sanitizing
  • Purchased electrostatic sprayers to disinfect buildings
  • Removed things that are difficult to clean or disinfect
  • Cleaning & disinfectant supplies for every classroom
