School Meal Operations
Food and Nutrition Services will be offering freshly cooked meals to students to ensure they are well nourished and ready to get the most from CPS educators. Below is some basic information to ensure families know what to expect with dining in school.

Who will be preparing the meals?
Food & Nutrition Staff within the school kitchens will prepare breakfast and lunch for pick up.

Who will be bringing meals from the kitchen to the classroom?
A separate designated staff person (this will vary by school). In an effort to prevent cross contact we will avoid having a kitchen staff member distribute meals.

Who will be tracking meal distribution to students?
An educator, para, or other designee in the classroom.

What type of food will be offered?
There will be multiple meal options each day including hot entrées such as pasta or cold options such as entrée salads. At most schools meals will be packaged individually in ‘take-out’ style containers similar to what you see from restaurants. As space and guidance allows some students may go through the kitchen serving line to select their meals.

Where will students eat?

The district has prioritized dining outdoors whenever possible. When dining indoors is necessary students will be seated 3 feet apart facing the same direction.

When will meals be offered?

The meal schedule will be at the Principal’s discretion in collaboration with Food and Nutrition staff.

How much will school meals cost?

Students may select a complete* Breakfast and Lunch at no cost for the entire school year.
*A meal is considered complete when at least three food categories identified by the USDA (Grains, Fruits, Vegetables, Meat/Meat Alternative, and Milk), have been selected and at least one of them is a fruit or vegetable.

How will kitchens know what to send up to each classroom or pick up location?
Educators will be able to pre-order meals for the class as they take attendance. The district attendance software has the ability to capture meal request data, so once attendance data is completed the kitchen will be able to pull a report with meal request totals for each classroom.

How do we get meals to accommodate our child’s allergies?
Call the Food and Nutrition office well in advance so arrangements can be made: 617.349.6858. We have dietitians on staff who can coordinate with school kitchens and teachers to work out logistics.
