Greetings CPS Community!

Happy last week of school!

As I reflect on the year, I am pleased with the work that has been done this school year especially with us continuing to navigate the impact of COVID. It has been a pleasure to honor all of our 8th graders who are moving on to high school. The 8th grade class has had one of the most unique middle school experiences. We are proud of all of their accomplishments and the way they have modeled resilience and determination.

The end of the school year is bittersweet for me; it culminates the ending of one phase of our journey together and marks a period of planning and preparation for the next phase of our journey to educate our young people.

To that end, at tomorrow’s Special Meeting of the School Committee, I will officially announce my appointment of the Chief of Academics and Schools and the Chief Talent Officer and the School Committee will vote to approve my recommendation for the Assistant Superintendent of Student Services. These are exciting times for CPS and the overall Cambridge community with welcoming new members of the CPS team and a new City Manager. I am excited about the evolution and growth of our schools and community.

This will be my last weekly Monday newsletter for the school year. We will pick back up in September, but please keep an eye out for some summer communications at the end of July and through August.

Thank you for a wonderful school year. I hope you have a restful and safe summer!

Make it Great!

Dr. Victoria L. Greer

Summer Reading 2022

Summer Reading activities and resources are now available!

Summer reading is an important part of reducing summer learning loss, providing a foundation for student success, and instilling a joy of reading. This summer, to improve access to summer reading books, CPS will provide books for students that will be distributed at their schools. Students in grades JK-7 will receive books that include fiction and informational, culturally relevant texts that reflect students’ interests, spark imagination, and keep them on their path to becoming lifelong readers.

To learn more, visit Summer Reading 2022.

Caught Doing Good

The Office of Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, the Design Lab, and the Math Department teamed up this spring to engage K - 5 educators in a Design Challenge focused on the question: How might we disrupt racial inequity in elementary math classrooms and the related systems?

Equity Lab participants from our 12 elementary schools have been meeting since March. Participants came up with a problem related to racial inequity and math identity and achievement, and crafted a design question aligned with that problem. In April and May, Equity Lab members designed and tried out a prototype connected to the problem they identified. Earlier this month, Equity Lab members shared their prototypes, reflections, and learning with math coaches, school leaders, and other educators in a conversation about math and equity.
