For years, Cambridge Public Schools has had one of the shortest school days for preschool through grade 8 students across the Commonwealth. The disparity has presented a challenge for educators as the district strives to provide students with the instruction and enrichment opportunities they deserve.
Beginning in the 2024-2025 school year, the elementary and upper school day will have 30 more minutes embedded in the school day. The additional instructional time will allow the district to be better able to thoughtfully meet state requirements for time on learning, support students socially and emotionally, and provide needed collaboration time for educators. With the exception of Fletcher Maynard Academy (FMA) and Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Schools,
every Wednesday, the elementary and upper schools will dismiss 30 minutes early. FMA and MLK will dismiss two hours earlier on Wednesdays.
At Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, the school day will be extended by five minutes. This additional time will be used for instruction.
