Remote Learning Continues Next Week

Remote Learning Continues Next Week
Posted on 12/30/2020
Dear CPS Community,

We hope this note finds you enjoying a safe and restful winter break.

After consulting with Cambridge Public Health Department officials today, we have made the decision to continue our current all-remote learning model next week (January 4 - January 8) until at least Monday, January 11.

This decision is made out of an abundance of caution. Our current guidelines, and the metrics monitored on our CPS COVID-19 Data Dashboard, would allow us to resume in-person learning next week. However, given the projected post-holiday increase in cases and because fewer individuals have participated in testing during the holiday week so far, current data do not provide us with a complete picture of the projected increase in transmissions over the winter break due to gatherings and travel.

It is in the best interest of students and staff to administer staff testing the week of January 4 and continue to work with the Cambridge Public Health Department to monitor data in preparation for a return to in-person learning on January 11.

Looking ahead, emerging national data continue to indicate schools are not the cause of the virus being spread among their communities. We continue to plan for expanded in-person learning in February. Next week, we will share updated plans for the second semester, which will be discussed at Tuesday’s School Committee meeting at 6pm.

This is also an opportunity to remind everyone that we must stay vigilant. Wearing a mask, washing hands and maintaining physical distancing are important and effective ways to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. We also encourage you to take advantage of COVID-19 testing through Cambridge’s robust testing program. These practices will help ensure that we can safely expand in-person learning options for more of our students.

In these final days of 2020, I want to thank you again for your support during an incredibly challenging year. We are striving to make these difficult decisions with the best information we have at hand. I am confident you share our optimism for the new year, and the promise of brighter days ahead.

Sincerely,

Kenneth N. Salim, Ed.D.
