Department Information
The mission of the English Language Arts Department is to support effective literacy instruction in our schools that is standards based, expands rigorous, joyful, and culturally responsive learning experiences, ensures high achievement for all students and enables our students to become life-long readers and writers. The ELA department strives to provide all students with access to a challenging curriculum that includes a rich diversity of high-quality literature from multiple genres, cultures and time periods and complex informational texts. The 2017 Massachusetts English Language Arts and Literacy Standards provide a instructional framework with expectations for reading, writing, language, speaking and listening and rich integrated learning experiences. Emphasis is placed on a strong independent reading program which means that students are given ample opportunities to read a variety of books to increases their motivation to read and gives students enough practice to develop excellent reading skills and increase their love of reading. Opportunities to authentically integrate technology and media into our classrooms are present throughout the ELA Curriculum.
