Katrina Goldsaito Visits King Open Second Graders

On October 21, Katrina Goldsaito held writers’ workshops with every 2nd grade class! Students prepared for her visit in Library classes. Katrina’s critically acclaimed book The Sound of Silence is a story of mindfulness, listening, and gave us a glimpse of Tokyo. Katrina helped us create “onomatopoetry,” writing and drawing about sounds we love. See her examples online here. Her visit was made possible with funds from the King Open Book Fair.

Baldwin’s Skype Visit with Author Lauren Tarshis

Baldwin Fourth and fifth grade students had the opportunity to visit with New York Times bestselling author Lauren Tarshis via Skype. Lauren Tarhis is the author of the I Survived series and editor of Storyworks Magazine. She talked to the students about what inspires her and about her writing process. The students asked thoughtful questions and had a great discussion. Thank you to Lauren for spending time with our students. Her book I Survived: The Great Chicago Fire, 1871 is on the nominated list of books for the Massachusetts Children’s Book Award. Her talk may inspire some to participate in the annual reading challenge.

On February 1st, the Haggerty fifth graders joined students from the Baldwin, Graham and Parks, and Kennedy-Longfellow to meet author / cartoonist / illustrator George O’Connor. He is the creator of the popular Olympians Rule! series. This event was sponsored by Porter Square Book Foundation (PSBF) and Cambridge Public Library. Thanks to PSBF, all students in attendance received a copy of Artemis: Wild Goddess of the Hunt, the newest book in the Olympian series. Student feedback on the trip was enthusiastic: “He was funny and fast paced.” “He told stories to help us relate to his books.” “He’s my favorite author and I can’t believe I met him!”

Kathryn Otoshi Visits Tobin Students

Kathryn Otoshi came to visit Tobin students (and other schools) in March. She shared her thought process as she wrote her books that help us understand how we can combat bullying, understand our own character and how to appreciate others around us. Otoshi is the author of the books One, Zero, and Two, as well as Beautiful Hands – books that each classroom has been reading for inspiration, as they work on ways to help others and be kind to each other. It was an inspiring day.

Inquisitor's TaleAdam Gidwitz @ Cambridge Public Library
In April, students from the Amigos, Morse, and Vassal Lane were treated to a visit from author Adam Gidwitz. The visit was sponsored by the Porter Square Books Foundation and Cambridge Public Library. Thanks to the Porter Square Books Foundation, all students in attendance left with a signed copy of Adam’s Newbery Award-winning book The Inquisitor’s Tale.
