Second Grade STEM Activities
On Wednesday, January 11th, the three second grade classrooms engaged in three types of S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) activities - each one for 45 min. The activity stations were 1) Stop Motion Animation on the school iPads, 2) Cardboard construction: building creations from cardboard and recyclables using tape and special cardboard screws, and 3) Building your own art bot or rover using small batteries, motors, and LEDs. I witnessed lots of experimenting with the materials and testing out of hypotheses - as well as cool moving art bots and creative structures!

This activity would not have been possible without the large role played by parents. A huge thanks you to the parent organizers: Carroll Magill and Alicia Volpicelli, and the many parent volunteers: Cameron Wu, Andrew Harteveldt, and his parents from England, Lovleen Judson, Jenny Gotwals, and a colleague of Alicia's from the Lincoln Labs! This was a little preview of our STEAM night coming in May! Thanks all!

OT Corner

OT/PT Corner
By: By Robert O'Connell and Leslie Nielsen
Occupational Therapist & Physical Therapist

Leslie Nilsen and Robert O’Connell are the respective PT and OT for the Haggerty School. As part of their job to help all students at Haggerty, they are going to offer a monthly section to help students and their families be stronger, healthier, and more focused in 2017. ?

Movement of the Month: Table

  • With hands and feet flat on the floor, lift bottom up to make a table.
  • Hold for as long as possible without moving (30 seconds would be great).
  • Make sure to take a few deep breaths (don’t hold your breath).
  • Try to keep bottom high and knees straight.
  • If knees fall out to side, put a pillow, ball, or stuffed animal in between knees!?

OT/PT CornerChallenge: Marching Table: Try marching in place while holding table. Don’t let bottom drop down!

Music Corner
Dear Haggerty Families,

MethaI’m excited to introduce you to Caitlin Mehta, who will fill in for my role at Haggerty for the duration of my parental leave. Ms. Mehta has most recently covered a long term sub position at Haggerty (and 7 other CPS elementary schools!) teaching 5th grade woodwinds, but has experience teaching both elementary general music and instrumental music. Ms. Mehta will shadow me January 17-23 in preparation for taking over. She’ll teach JK-2 music and Haggerty Chorus from the beginning of my leave until the end of the school year. I’ll be back in September!
