Update from Special Start
Hello Peabody Community from Special Start! At this midpoint in the year, we are happy to report that we’ve had a great year so far. Children have been engaged in a variety of curriculum themes and activities throughout the fall and winter. For those who don’t know our program, Special Start is a Peabody School program, but we also operate under the citywide Special Start Program of the Cambridge Public Schools. Special Start provides preschool education, special education and therapeutic services for preschoolers across the city in a variety of settings. We have 2 classrooms here at the Peabody School including Room 155 (Moira McNabb O’Connell, Jess Fitzgerald, Alex Stringer and Paige Mochi) and Room 156 (Janet Forte, Allison Carroll and Lynda Janul). School Store
News from the 5th Grade
There are many exciting things happening in fifth grade this year! For one, the Peabody School Store is open and has been a HUGE success! Every morning between 8AM and 8:40AM, students from both Mr. Kelly and Ms. Bielecki’s classes sell merchandise to fellow students and parents. They are involved in the ordering, pricing, and bookkeeping of all items. Not only is it a lot of fun for students, but also they learn important interpersonal skills, customer service and real-life problem solving.

In addition to working in the school store, fifth graders partner with four JK & K classes every Friday for book buddies. This is a great way to model their roles as the “oldest” in the building, and foster a love of reading to their younger schoolmates. They will read to students, assist in class projects, and practice handwriting and spelling skills. They get to be teachers themselves!

Alton Jones Information
Our 5th grade classes will be packing up and heading down to the W. Alton Jones Environmental Education Center from February 24th-26th. While at Alton Jones, we participate in social studies, science, and team building activities. The following social studies activities: Underground Railroad and Living History. During these activities, the students travel through a village in 1832 interacting with its residents. The science activities in which the students take part in are: Winter Ecology, Predator Prey, Geology, and Night Hike.

We have been preparing for our trip through morning meeting, science and social studies lessons. Some of the best ways we find to teach young students about these important periods of history and science concepts are through interactive read alouds and discussion.

Upon return, students will begin composing a written reflection of their time at camp. This is an excellent culmination to what we are sure will be a memorable and enriching experience.
