Dear Families

sarahOne of our goals at Amigos is to get our students excited about math! This year, math teacher, Ms. Sawady, is working to support students throughout the building to have a positive math mindset. Today I’d like to share her work and thoughts with you so that you can continue the conversation at home.

When we think about math, we often think of calculations. We have spent many hours memorizing multiplication facts and working with fractions. While these are important tools that allow us to explore math more deeply, they do not accurately represent the field of mathematics. It would be like learning the rules of grammar and how to spell, but never being able to read books or write stories. We wanted to share with you a broader vision of what math can be.

We envision math class as a place where all students are able to engage deeply in mathematical problem solving; where there is more than one way to solve a problem; where mistakes are seen as learning opportunities. When students learn from each other, they encounter different ways of visualizing math problems. When students explain their mathematical reasoning, their voices are heard. When we open up our math questions, we give students the opportunity to understand what they are learning.
We believe that with this broader vision, all of us can see ourselves as mathematicians!

Have a wonderful math filled weekend!

Sincerely,

Sarah Bartels-Marrero

Estimadas Familias

sarahEstimadas familias,

Atentamente,

Sarah Bartels-Marrero
Directora
