Climate Change Collaboration with Commonwealth of Dominica

The 5th grade scientists will be beginning a project with a school in the Commonwealth of Dominica focusing on climate change. The class will be conducting experiments and connecting with a school in Dominica through Skype. Our fabulous family liaison, Daniel Skeritt, and Meghan Russell, FMA's Citysprouts Coordinator, are spearheading this great collaborative project. The focus will be to find out how plants grow through ecosystems and climate changes. Mango seeds are the choice for these experiments. Our 5th grade junior scientists will attempt to grow mango plants in our FMA raised outdoor garden beds while the students in tropical Dominica will be doing the same. Here’s how we think the experiment will work. First, students will eat the delicious mangoes. Next, they will remove as much flesh from the seeds as possible. We’ll then plant the seeds and wait for nature to take its course. The seeds will hopefully sprout and grow! Both classrooms will collect and compare data on the plants as they grow. We’re all super excited to see these junior scientists collaborate and are eagerly waiting the final results.

CCSC Steps Into the Gym
On Monday, April 1, students from the Community Charter school of Cambridge performed a Step sequence during the FMA morning meeting. Our students were awed and inspired by the performance. This performance was a continuation of our ongoing partnership with the school. In the past, high school volunteers from CCSC have volunteered as meal servers at our international Dinner of Thanks. Big thanks to Devin Morris, the outreach coordinator from CCSC, and the student Steppers.

From the Nurse's Office
nurse graphicIt’s lovely to have the trees and flowers blooming again, but they also bring pollen and seasonal allergies. Allergies can be uncomfortable for some children and can distract them from their school work.

The health office does not supply allergy medications (antihistamines, eye drops, nasal sprays). If your child needs medication for his/her allergies, make sure that you give the medication before s/he leaves for school. These medicines work best when given regularly. Please do not give your child Benadryl to relieve allergy discomfort or send allergy medications with your child to school. If your child feels especially uncomfortable with spring allergies, talk with your doctor or nurse practitioner about the best way to treat allergy discomfort.

To ensure your child’s health and safety at school, it’s important to keep your child’s health records up-to-date. Please bring a copy of your child’s annual physical examination (often called a “school record”) to the health office. If your child needed follow up for his/her vision exam, please bring a copy of the eye doctor’s report. If you don’t have a copy, just call Nurse Mary-Margaret at the health office to update of that visit. Thank you for your part to keep our school community healthy!

FMA Courageous Conversations
Next Meeting: Monday, April 29th at 6PM
Join us for our next Courageous Conversations about Race on Monday the 29th from 6-8PM in the FMA Library. Dinner will be served at 5:30PM. Child Care will be provided. We welcome all members of the FMA community and their friends. Please email [email protected] or call 617.349.6588 with questions or to confirm your attendance and child-care needs.

The FMA held its court Courageous Conversations evening discussion on Monday, March 18. We had about twenty family members, staff and community members participated in the discussions. This meeting was focused on how to use media—particularly tv and movies—to engage children around topics of race and equity. These forms of media are regularly consumed by students, and also often touch on topics of race and equity in ways that could benefit from, and/or stimulate conversation. We believe this kind of media presents a perfect opportunity for families and staff to engage students. Monday night’s discussion centered on three video clips: 1) a research presentation on the impact of media on minorities, 2) two video clips from the Black-ish tv series, and 3) a clip from Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing. After watching each clip we discussed how the clip addressed matters of race and equity, how students may engage with the clip on their own, and how families and staff could talk to students about the clip and the topics of race and equity. The resulting conversations were powerful and helped the group think about ways that families, staff, and community could collaborate to support students around the topics of race and equity.

Hidden Figures Screening
