Life Skills Workshop Series for Students
In partnership with the Cambridge Economic Opportunity Committee, CRLS will present a series of Life Skills Workshops on personal finances. Come learn about budgeting, savings, spending habits, setting financial goals, managing credit, and filing your personal income taxes. All students are invited to attend. The workshops are held during early release days and delayed openings so students will not miss class time.

The first workshop will take place on Tuesday, March 12th at 11:15AM. in the Media Arts Cafeteria. Pizza will be served. These workshops are brought you to through the student inspired and lead Participatory Budget Project.

We have tickets to give away for a series of presentations on Business in the Era of Climate Change, sponsored by Harvard Business School and WBUR. If you want to hear what top thinkers in the country are saying, email us with your name, grade and CM (for students). Teachers are welcome to request tickets by email too!

Free Tickets to the Cambridge Symphony Orchestra: Masterworks concert Heroes and Angels
Sunday, March 17, 2019 | 4PM
Kresge Auditorium, MIT, 48 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge

The free tickets are for a youth and adult companion (maximum one adult ticket per youth.) Reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis while tickets last. Underwriting for youth tickets has been generously provided by Cambridge Trust Company.

To reserve these free tickets, email us with the following info:
name, number of youths, number of accompanying adults (maximum one free adult ticket per youth) and mentioning CRLS.

Additional regular-price tickets are available for purchase online and, space providing, at the door for: $25 (adult general seating), $15 (students, seniors). More info >>

Orienteering

CRLS Spring Orienteering Team 

The CRLS Spring Orienteering Team will be starting up again on March 18th. The team will travel to the forest and local parks regularly to develop physical and mental skills related to running and navigation. Some returning members of the team are also competing at the Junior National Championships in Virginia on April 13 & 14. Last year the CRLS team took home the Varsity Championship and will be working to defend their title at this year's competition.

The CRLS team will also attend events hosted by local orienteering clubs NEOC and CSU. These events will range from navigationally complex forest courses, to simple and fast park races.

If you are interested in orienteering and/or competing at Junior National competition in Virginia, be sure to register for the team by March 11. If you have any questions, email coach Ethan Childs

Calvin
An Octave Opportunity
Students in all grades may apply for The Calvin Hicks Memorial Award for the Study of Music presented by Friends of CRLS. One recipient will be selected for an award in the amount of $500 toward music lessons or a music class at any accredited music school this summer. Students in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 who want to begin learning or advance their skills with any instrument, voice, or music theory are welcome to apply by April 20. Students in all grades and all levels of musical experience are eligible, as long as they love music, are committed to learning, have a GPA of B or higher, and are enrolled in the free/reduced lunch program. Get the application >>

Spring Athletes & the 33rd Annual City Run Returns to the Pond
Sunday, April 7, 2019 | 9AM 
CRLS spring athletes will participate with their respective teams joining hundreds of other runners from other CRLS teams and Cambridge area businesses and organizations. Pledges collected by athletes and businesses benefit the teams as well as the Friends of Cambridge Athletics (FOCA) coaches’ grants and scholarships programs. Parents and student alike are invited to participate in this 5k, entirely within Fresh Pond Reservation, along its beautiful, historic pathways. You can pre-register by clicking here. CRLS Students are free. If students aren’t interested in running, we need volunteers and they need Community Service hours! Contact Race Directors with any questions. We are in need of at least 10 parent volunteers (day of event) and would love to hear from you.

Race start/location: 9AM, Registration 7:30AM at Fresh Pond (water building), 250 Fresh Pond Parkway- Park at Tobin School, Vassal Lane or ride your bike!

Adulting 101 for Teens
Back by popular demand, this session of Adulting 101 will answer your questions about finances. How do I manage my savings and spending? How do I open a bank account? What is credit anyway, and how do I get some of that?

Fair LogoAt the 2019 Post-Secondary Fair, for students who learn differently, attendees will meet representatives from college and university admissions and student support services, gap year programs, technical schools, and other non-traditional options. More than 40 exhibitors ranging from University of New Hampshire to Lynn University to The American Academy of Personal Training and everything in between.

Upcoming Bridge Closures
Beginning March 22, 2019, three major bridges in Somerville, MA will be closed to facilitate construction of the Green Line Extension (GLX) project. Traffic detours will affect local and regional commutes through Medford, Somerville, Cambridge, and Boston. Motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists should plan accordingly and may want to seek alternate routes.

Bridge Closure Schedules:

  • Broadway Bridge at Ball Square on the Somerville / Medford border
    Closed March 22, 2019 to March 2020

  • Washington Street Bridge (Underpass) in East Somerville
    Closed April 2019 to Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 to Fall 2020

  • Medford Street Bridge at Gilman Square in Somerville
    Closed July 2019 to Spring 2020

Does Your Student Need Help Quitting Vaping? 
Truth Initiative recently launched a first-of-its-kind free e-cigarette quit program now available to young vapers looking for help. The program is tailored by age group to give appropriate recommendations about quitting and also serves as a resource for parents looking to help their children who now vape. It is being launched and integrated into the already successful This is Quitting (app) and BecomeAnEX® digital cessation programs from Truth Initiative. Teens, adults, and parents of teens seeking help around quitting e-cigarettes/JUULing can text “QUIT” to 202.804.9884.

Cambridge School Volunteers (CSV)
CSV is excited to return and support the CRLS community. For the 2018-2019 school year, CSV's high school one-to-one programs will be offered in three locations. Please read below for service details.

Subject-based Tutoring Services
Before-school Tutoring (7 - 8AM)
We are sharing space with Work Force. Our before-school tutoring will be located in room 2403 (in the middle of the hallway on the second floor).

After-school Tutoring (2:45 - 3:45PM)
After-school tutoring will be located in the College/Career Resource Center, room 1501.

Drop-In Math Tutoring
Monday - Friday | 7:30 - 8AM

College/Career Mentoring Services (2:30PM)
SAT Prep and College/Career Mentoring will be held in the CRLS Library's Inquiry Lab (formerly known as the fiction room).

SAT Prep
SAT Prep's Session I is from 2:30 to 4:30PM on Tuesdays at the CRLS Library, Inquiry Lab. Please encourage seniors to attend- all grade levels are welcome.

College/Career Mentoring
College/career mentoring is from 2:30 to 4:30PM on Wednesdays. In support of guidance, we help seniors with personal statements/scholarship essays, and post secondary education searches and applications. We reserved the inquiry lab to 3:30PM. However, mentors will continue to work with them in the library up to 4:30PM. The kickoff date is Oct. 3rd.

Jenny Smith is now available at the Career and College Center (CCRC) on Tuesday - Friday from 9AM - 3:30PM. uAspire works to ensure that all young people have the financial information and resources necessary to find an affordable path to – and through – a post secondary education. uAspire partners with high schools, community organizations, and colleges to provide college affordability advice to more than 10,000 young people and their families every year. Through our work, college-ready students have the support and knowledge they need to overcome financial barriers and succeed in college.
