Family

Got feedback?
We can't wait to hear from you! CPS is conducting our first annual Family Survey, and we hope to hear from you by June 14th!

If you haven't already received an email or text message, or it's gotten lost in your inbox, check out our Family Survey page and click on your family's school(s). You can also find questions & answers about the survey, view our outreach plan, and even make comments on ways to improve our outreach strategy.

For those who don't have a good way to take it from home, watch for survey-taking stations at events at school. We value your feedback and hope to learn and improve based on what we hear from you.

The survey is part of our continuous improvement efforts, a key component of our CPS District Plan

Clock

Not enough hours in the day?
As part of our ongoing efforts to learn and improve as a school district, Cambridge Public Schools has identified a frequently-cited obstacle: time.

Please join with us in discussing the recommendations of a joint report from the Cambridge Education Association and CPS Administration, which proposes extending the length of the school day.

Beginning with these school-based conversations, and continuing with a broad community process in Fall 2018, the Superintendent will develop recommendations for any potential changes by Winter 2018-19.

Learn more about this process on the CPS website. Upcoming discussions are listed below, many of which have been scheduled for a regular meeting of School Councils. There will be more opportunities to contribute your thoughts and ideas over the coming months. Or, feel free to email us.

Orienteering

Boston Area to Celebrate World Orienteering Day
Events to be held in Foxborough, Newton, Stoneham, Boston and Cambridge
People all over the world will be celebrating World Orienteering Day this May by trying out fun activities with maps. WOD is coming to the Boston area with programs at ten
different schools throughout Boston and Cambridge, and three orienteering events open to the public. People of all ages are welcome -- with a particular focus on children and newcomers. Barb Bryant, Orienteering USA’s Secretary and Vice President of Youth Initiatives, says, “Orienteering gets kids outdoors, running and solving navigational problems at the same time. We are excited to see the growth in this sport in Massachusetts.”

Orienteering is a navigation sport which takes place in forests, parks, school campuses, and even city streets. Participants find checkpoints using a map and compass. The fastest person to visit all the checkpoints wins. Events are suitable for all ages, and courses range from short & easy to long &
strenuous. Learn more >>

KIDS 4 CODING will be offering Affordable Summer Tech Programs
At Lesley University in Cambridge, July 2 - Aug 17 and Newbury College in Brookline July 2 - July 27.

TEALS

TEALS Program
In cooperation with Microsoft Corporation’s TEALS (Technology Education and Literacy in Schools) initiative, Cambridge Rindge & Latin School has built a very successful Computer Science program. In just five years, the program has grown to where next year we will be offering 4 sections of Introduction to Computer Science, 6 sections of AP (Advanced Placement) Computer Science and 4 sections of AP Computer Science Principles. That translates to over 200 students in these classes!!

We have a wonderful opportunity for you to get involved with our program by teaming up with TEALS as a classroom teacher. TEALS is a grassroots program that recruits, mentors and places passionate high tech professionals into high school classes as part-time teachers. The professional brings his or her subject knowledge and will join one of our CRLS classroom teachers in a team-teaching model. TEALS provides training for both parties as well as course outlines based on successful college courses. Read more >>

2018 FOCRLS Scholarships

A Very Big Night for Scholarships at CRLS
On Thursday evening, May 17, CRLS and Friends of CRLS hosted a rollicking, well-attended Scholarship Festival. The evening was kicked off by a Scholarship Night Reception to honor sponsor-donors of scholarships (families, businesses, high education, corporations) as well as this year's student recipients, their family members, and community supporters. The sponsor reception, a partnership between CRLS and Friends of CRLS, was attended by nearly 130 guests with catering provided by the CRLS Culinary Program, comments by Principal Damon Smith and Elaine Schear, Executive Director of Friends of CRLS, and reflections about making the transition between CRLS and college by Kester Messan-Hilla, CRLS '17 and recipient of five scholarships, upon completing his freshman year at Williams College.

At the award ceremony, 180 separate scholarships were presented to 130 students this year, totaling $300,000, an all-time high and increasingly critical means of support.

For more information about starting a scholarship through Friends of CRLS, to donate to our general fund, or to volunteer, please email us.

Helpful Summer Camp & Gap Resources
Chances are that your families are starting to inquire about enriching summer or gap experiences for students. I want to make sure you are aware that TeenLife.com is an excellent, free resource for these types of experiences. We list more than 7000 programs! Two weeks at a pre-college summer program on a college campus may be all a student needs to open their eyes to what's possible. To search for a program, simply type a special interest in the search bar of our home page, leave the location blank, and click on "Go". Then choose a filter to narrow down the search to Summer or Gap Programs. The more specific the search term, the better, for example Civil Engineering rather than Engineering or Sculpture rather than Art. If the number of listings is too large, conduct the search again with the name of a State in the location field.
