FMA Fourth Graders Study the States
Fourth graders in Room 305 finished their 50 States Unit in Social Studies by completing a State Float on a chosen state. Students researched capitals, major cities, state flags, birds and trees, major landforms, and interesting facts about states as close as Maine and as far away as California. The fourth-grade state experts had the opportunity to show off their hard work and creative abilities at a showcase in their classroom. Families and FMA staff walked around the State Float gallery and got to interact with the state experts. So if you're thinking of taking a vacation somewhere in the United States, make sure to ask 305 students for their advice on what to see and do!
Felicitaciones!
The Fletcher Maynard Academy PTO / Spanish Committee was one of 39 recipients of Cambridge Arts Council Grant Awards for the 2018 year, for a Mariachi workshop to be presented in October 2018 as part of Fletcher Maynard Academy’s annual celebration of LatinX heritage. The event is inspired by a 30-minute performance by Mariachi Veritas de Harvard for the 2016 LatinX celebration. Beyond the mariachi performance that the 2016 event offered, the upcoming event will offer the opportunity to interact with performers and learn about their instruments, traditions, and performance preparations and routines. We would like to thank the PTO on their success in the grant application process! For more information, email us.
Harvard Supports FMA
Harvard's College Events Board hosted its "Love the World" event on February 13th, where students could come and do little acts of service at multiple stations. One of these stations was making valentines/goodie bags for Fletcher Maynard Academy's ASD department. These goodie bags had included a few pieces of candies, stickers, toys, and, of course, personalized valentines. The FMA is grateful for Harvard’s student’s support!
Courageous Conversations Update
The FMA Hosted its second evening Courageous Conversations on Monday, February 26 from 5:30-8PM. About fifteen faculty, family and community members gathered to discuss issues of race and equity in the FMA community. The Conversations’ goals are 1) to understand the meaning of race, racial equity, racial identity and other factors impact radicalized experiences, 2) explore how these factors influence the FMA community and 3) Start thinking about how we may leverage the knowledge, skills and motivation of the group address some of these issues.
At the next meeting on Monday, March 26 at 5:30PM, we will turn our focus to microagressions and how they touch on race and racism. Microagressions are “brief, everyday exchanges that send denigrating messages to certain individuals because of their group membership”. They can often be subtle and subconscious, and connect day to day interactions to larger societal and institutional norms. If you’d like to join us at the next meeting please email us.
FMA Policy Update
As of 2/26/2018, the front door of FMA will remain LOCKED during the morning rush period and throughout the day. Parents/visitors are expected to sign in at the front office upon entering FMA.
Students and parents will be able to enter the building promptly at 7:45AM– unless harsh weather conditions students will report to the cafeteria downstairs.
Uniforms are expected to be worn EVERYDAY– with the exception of no uniform Friday– the first of every month for $1.
Students are tardy after 8AM, please remember to report to the front office to get a pass to gain entry into your classroom.
Math Olympiad
Each week the students of Math Olympiad work together on novel math problems using various strategies.
Last week the students were given a challenge. Each group needed to design and construct a tower out of 20 pieces of spaghetti and 20 small marshmallows that will support one large marshmallow at the top. The tower needed to be free standing. Students did great work! We are going to improve our designs and try it again later this spring!
Materials include: 20 small marshmallows, 20 pieces of spaghetti, 1 large marshmallow, and a 12 inch piece of tape.
