Sixth Graders Build Community
In sixth grade we are building community by getting to know more about each other. In addition, we are reading literature that depicts characters struggling with peer pressure and grappling with opportunities to demonstrate compassion and empathy. As a prelude to this unit, students were given two assignments: “When Someone Was Compassionate to Me” and “When I Was Compassionate to Someone”. Enjoy a sample of student work!

Math Puzzles!

#1: If it takes 1 ½ chickens 1 ½ days to lay 1 ½ eggs, how many eggs can 9 chickens lay in 9 days?
(HINT: the answer is NOT 9!)

#2: Find the sum of the digits in the answer to 9999…99 x 4444…44

The first number has 94 digits, each of which is a 9.  The second number also has 94 digits, each of which is a 4.

NOTE: Read the problem carefully! You are not solving the multiplication problem. You are finding the sum of the digits in the product (the answer to the multiplication problem).
