Dear Families,

It has been an exciting week for bilingual education. This past Wednesday, the Massachusetts Legislature approved the “Language Opportunity for Our Kids” bill, otherwise known as the LOOK bill. This bill not only expands educational options and opportunities for English Learners, but also officially establishes the Seal of Biliteracy. The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by a school or district in recognition of students who have studied, attained and/or maintained proficiency in two or more languages. It is the time of year for Beyond the 4th Wall auditions. All 3rd to 8th graders are invited to audition for the production of “Into the Woods” and no experience is necessary!

Auditions at Amigos will take place on Thursday, December 14th in Room 311. A Cambridge-wide audition will also take place at the Dance Complex (536 Mass Ave) in Central Square on Monday, December 11th. Students are encouraged to sign up online. For more information, please visit us online.

Between the Internet and social media, it is often difficult to stay current of what might be influencing and intriguing our students and children. As a result, it is more important than ever to share what we know as a community. As teachers and administrators, we often turn to the website commonsensemedia.org to get a sense for a TV show we hear students discussing or an app that is trending. If you know of any social media trends, which we should be aware of, please email your homeroom teachers and/or the administration.

This week, older students are talking about: The CW original show "Riverdale". It's a modern version of the "Archie" comic strip, which follows a 15-year-old Archie and his classmates. The show includes sexual relationships, teenage pregnancy and conflictive relationships.

Common Sense Media suggests families can talk to their kids about:

• Dysfunctional family relationships and discuss why writers so often turn to them for good material, both for drama and comedy. What is it about the relationships in Riverdale that's compelling?
  
  
• The series of comics on which Riverdale is based. Why would they transform the light comedy of the cartoons into dark drama?

Ha sido una semana emocionante para la educación bilingüe. El miércoles, la Legislatura de Massachusetts aprobó el proyecto de ley “Oportunidad de Idioma para Nuestros Niños”, también conocido como el proyecto de ley LOOK.
