Halloween Party

A big shout-out to FMA Community Schools, Tutoring Plus, and FMA faculty and staff for coming together to host a fun and exciting halloween party. The party featured a bouncy castle, several activity stations, a performance by Davy the clown, and a halloween costume parade. Thank you to all that came out. Hope to see you at our Dinner of Thanks on November 16!

FMA

Earth Scientists
FMA fourth graders transformed into earth scientists on recent field trips to the Maynard Ecology Center at Fresh Pond in order to extend their learning about changes in the earth’s surface. Under the guidance of coordinator Susan Agger, students walked through the woods to observe evidence of the effects of weathering and erosion. Students observed roots and plants growing through sidewalks, soil washed away from the banks of the pond, and sand that had traveled off the path after a recent stretch of rainstorms. Lily Bilodeau said, “I now understand that you can find changes in Earth’s surface even in your own neighborhood.” Back in the science classroom, fourth-grade students were tasked with conducting their own erosion investigation using models. As Anycia Pierre stated, “Models are great to really help you understand something better.” Read on >>

E” inc.’s Kids Green Their Schools program is back at the Fletcher Maynard Academy this year, starting this month! This year’s program is focused on Water, and will feature in-class lessons about its properties, cycle, and uses, as well as current water issues and how we can help address them.

There will also be a Green Team for fourth and fifth graders who would like to be more involved in environmental and sustainability efforts at Fletcher Maynard—more details will be announced and applications will be available on Monday, November 6th. Green Team applications will be due Thursday, November 9th.

Finally, we will be continuing with the energy-saving action project from previous years, stay tuned for details about the energy-saving contest in the coming weeks!

If you have any questions about the program, you are welcome to contact Curtis Tripp, Fletcher Maynard's "e" inc. educator.

Spanish Committee

La escuela primaria Amina Madera Lauterio, an elementary school in Mexico, has become a sister school to the FMA. The school is located in Cedral, SLP Mexico, about six hours north of Mexico City. FMA and Amina Madera will collaborate to encourage cultural understanding and exchange between students, faculty and staff from both schools. The schools will encourage this collaboration by providing students from both schools with opportunities to get to know and interact with each other. One of these opportunities is coming soon! Sr. Casselli will host a Skype session between Amina Madera and the FMA during the third week of November. Stay tuned.

Memoirists

5th Grade Memoirists
Fifth graders continued to fine tune the art of personal narrative writing over the past six weeks. They focused on stretching out the tension in their stories, balancing external events with internal feelings, and sharing a revelation or lesson learned from their experience. These new skills will help them this spring as they become Memoirists! Read a few of them >>

90th Anniversary

Pentecostal Tabernacle
To celebrate their 90th Anniversary, Pentecostal Tabernacle (located in the Port area), under the direction of Senior Pastor, Bishop Brian Greene organized a day of community service for organizations in the neighborhood. A group of 12 volunteers, including four children came to FMA on Saturday to make centerpieces for our Annual International Dinner of Thanks. Each centerpiece contains two county flags and tissue paper flowers placed in decorated mason jars. Special thank you to the church for always finding ways to support the students and staff of Fletcher Maynard.
