Dear Families,
It has been quite a long week here at Amigos. I know that Monday’s events and our subsequent lockdown were scary for many of us. I want to share with you that I am very proud of my staff and our students for the way they handled this incident. We practice and have drills regularly but it is good to know that when we really need to react quickly and follow our safety protocols, we can do it. As I said in my note to families on Monday, we received tremendous support from the Cambridge Police Department and I thank them as well.
Throughout this week, I have continued to meet with safety officers and CPS central administration to review our protocols and clarify communication procedures. We will also be working as a staff to further solidify our safety and security work throughout the building. This is something I take very seriously and I will always err on the side of caution to ensure that my students and staff are safe.
In the end, it seems that there was actually no real threat. The official police statement reads, "As some members of the community may be aware, there was a reported home invasion Monday on Andrew Street allegedly involving a suspect with a gun and knife. After an investigation and protective sweep of the home, it was determined there was no suspect or an actual incident. The alleged victim was transported to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation."
I also want to remind families that should their son/daughter be feeling nervous or scared about coming to school that they should reach out to any of our guidance staff: Sarah Miller, Johanna Homan or Amy Hrobak. All of our counselors are experienced in supporting students to process difficult events.
This week the results of the 2017 MCAS assessment were released. Once again our students- our school did a commendable job and I look forward to sharing more details with you in the near future. Parents should be receiving their individual student reports in the next few weeks
I hope to see you tonight at our Hispanic Heritage Celebration!
Sincerely,
Sarah Bartels-Marrero

Estimadas familias,
Todas nuestras consejeras tienen experiencia apoyando a estudiantes a procesar eventos difíciles.
Sinceramente,
Sarah Bartels-Marrero

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education adopted revised frameworks for mathematics in March 2017. Upper school math coaches, math teachers and the CPS Mathematics Department are currently re-aligning our curriculum maps to the new 2017 Massachusetts Mathematics Curriculum Framework standards, using Understanding by Design, which focuses first on teaching and assessing for understanding and learning transfer, and then designing curriculum that meets those ends.
