Dear Amigos Community, 

Welcome Back! I hope that you all had plenty of time to relax and enjoy the summer. About mid-July, I had some time to take a break and reflect on the year. It was an intense year, but overall, a very positive one. As I contemplate recent national events and rhetoric, I am ever more appreciative of our wonderful Amigos community and I hope that, together, we are infusing our young peoples’ lives with tolerance, compassion, and understanding. 

When I started in this position last year, I met with staff and community members as part of my entry plan. From these conversations arose similar trends, beliefs and areas of focus for our school. One of the most salient trends, but not a surprising one, is our shared belief in the transformative nature of dual language education for our children. Another trend is our shared desire for a diverse, strong, open and caring community. This type of community requires a high level of communication and respect from all members. While I believe we have made progress in this area, this work will be ongoing and continuous. A third trend is our collective interest in improving school climate. Again, I believe we have made progress in this area, however, real change takes time and we will continue this work in the years to come.

Querida comunidad de Amigos: 

¡Bienvenidos! Espero que hayan tenido mucho tiempo para relajarse y disfrutar del verano. A mediados de julio, me tomé un tiempo para descansar y para reflexionar acerca del año que pasó. En general, fue un año intenso pero muy positivo. Al contemplar los últimos acontecimientos y la retórica de lo que sucede a nivel nacional, me siento cada vez más agradecida de la maravillosa comunidad que tenemos en Amigos y espero que juntos les estemos inculcando a nuestros jóvenes la tolerancia, la compasión y el entendimiento.  

Cuando empecé en este puesto el año pasado, me reuní con miembros del personal y de la comunidad como parte de mi plan inicial. De estas conversaciones surgieron tendencias similares, convicciones y áreas en las que necesitábamos poner el foco para nuestra escuela. Una de las tendencias más importantes, aunque quizás no la que más nos sorprenda, es nuestra creencia compartida en la naturaleza transformadora de la educación bilingüe para nuestros hijos. Otra, es nuestro deseo compartido de lograr una comunidad diversa, sólida, abierta y solidaria. Este tipo de comunidad requiere de un alto nivel de comunicación y respeto de todos sus miembros. Si bien creo que hemos hecho progresos en este área, este trabajo deberá ser continuo y permanente. Una tercera tendencia compartida es el interés colectivo de mejorar el clima social de la escuela. Una vez más, creo que hemos hecho avances en este área, sin embargo los cambios reales llevan tiempo y seguiremos con este trabajo en los próximos años.
