Grade 2

Overarching themes for Grade Two Science include cause and effect (How do water and wind shape the surface of the Earth?), structure and function (How do the properties of materials affect how they are used?) and systems/system models (How do animals and plants get what they need to survive in the places where they live?).

Unit Description Essential Questions
Earth’s Surface
Students investigate where water is found on Earth and the forms it takes. They map landforms and observe how flowing water and wind cause them.
Why is the earth’s surface shaped the way it is?

How do models inform our understanding of the shape of the earth’s surface?
Materials and Their Uses
In this study of materials, students explore how and why different materials are used for different purposes based on their properties.
How does an engineer choose which materials to use?
Plant and Animal Survival
Building on what they learned in earlier grades, students investigate how plants and animals depend on other living things and their environment to survive and grow in the places where they live.
How do animals and plants get what they need to survive and grow in the places where they live?
