January 2022

Message from Mr. Abdel Sepulveda, Principal

My dear Peabody Community:

Welcome to the New Year at Peabody. I hope you enjoy our newsletter, Peabody Pumas in the Know. We will use our newsletter for our classroom teachers, specialists and other staff members to share updates on classroom activities, parent//caregiver events and other items of interest.

Here are some of the things we’ve been working on as a staff and with your children:

Our Kindness Project. A perfect reminder of how important kindness is to all of us. Thank you for your support for this project. The students enjoyed designing their rocks. It also opened up kindness conversations in the classrooms.

Below, you will read about our new Zones of Regulation Program we have implemented. I think you’ll notice that it is part of the focused work we are doing to help build our students holistically. Through our Zones of Regulation, Second Steps Program and Self Reflective practices, we are deeply committed to caring and educating the whole child. Our deep commitment to social and emotional learning walks side by side with our students' academic progress. Please know, we are not striving for perfection, but ongoing growth.

In December we wished Mary Ann Londino, Third Grade Special Educator, a happy and joyous retirement. Mrs. Lodino served many families over her years working for the Peabody and Cambridge Public Schools. She served as a mentor to so many of our special educators and a warm and kind light for our students. Thank you Mrs. Londino. We are better for knowing you.

Lastly, as you all know, we are still very much in a pandemic. The recent surge has been difficult on everyone. We are not letting our guard down and hope you aren’t either. Please continue to be vigilant at all times. Below you will find the most recent information regarding COVID procedures. As those guidelines continue to evolve, we will share them with you.

Jennifer Hedrington and I believe in an open door policy for our students, staff and families. Please reach out to me with questions or thoughts.

In kindness and service,
Mr. S.

Coaches Corner:
Ms. Michele Lippens, Math Coach

Greetings Peabody Family!

You may have previously met me when I worked as the special education teacher with our upper elementary students. I worked as a special education teacher for 14 years here at the Peabody. I hold a dual licensure in Elementary Education (1st - 5th grades) and Moderate Disabilities (preK - 8th grade). In addition, I hold an Elementary Mathematics License (1st - 6th grade). This year, I am proud to be working as the Math Coach for the Peabody School. As an instructional leader, I support, foster and facilitate the teaching and learning of mathematics. This means that I work with teachers to improve mathematics instruction, maintain and share best-practices and current research, and gather, analyze, and interpret data, such as from assessments and benchmark tests, to inform instruction. During the school day, this looks like, modeling a math lesson, planning and collaborating with grade level teams on differentiating instruction, developing professional learning opportunities for parents and our staff members, organizing math materials, and fostering a joy in mathematics for all our youth.

Update from Ms. Maya Cameron-Gilsey, Social Worker

Hello Peabody Families!

Since returning from break, our school community has been joyfully diving into our Social Emotional Learning curriculum- The Zones of Regulation. The goal of the curriculum is to teach students about emotions, self-regulation and tools to use for self-regulation skills. Children who can regulate their own emotions and attention are better ready to learn and thrive.

Zones of Regulation groups all the ways that children feel and act into four “Zones”.
Blue Zone — When your body is running slowly, such as when you are tired, sick, sad or bored.
Green Zone — When you are ready “good to go.” You feel happy, calm and focused.
Yellow Zone — When you feel your engine running high, such as when you are frustrated, overwhelmed, silly, wiggly, excited, worried, anxious, or surprised.
Red Zone — Is when you have “flipped your lid.” You have extreme feelings such as terror, uncontrolled anger, aggression, or elation.

zones of regulation
As a school, we are focusing on each Zone one at a time for 1-2 weeks. The first two weeks after break we focused on the Blue Zone and we are now in the midst of the Green Zone. Students are doing class activities focused on each zone, listening to stories, and seeing the hallways decorated depending on the color zone. All students are making a book titled “Me in My Zones” which shows how they feel in each Zone and what tools they can use. Next week, we will begin our two week unit on the Yellow Zone.

Questions to ask your students:
Can you tell me a “Blue” zone emotion? Or a “green” zone emotion?
What puts you in the blue zone or the green zone at home?
What is a strategy you learned to help yourself feel better when you are in the Blue Zone?
