Learning Highlights
Poems
At the Arnold Arboretum,
It smelled like nothing, no gasoline, no metal, no plastic, and no trash,
as if there was an invisible force-field keeping out all of the stench and hum
of the city.
All there is to see for miles is trees, shrubs, and nature. Turkeys,
squirrels, hawks, pill bugs.
It felt like peace, no worry about masks or cars, just nature.
All I heard was the wind, like a silky layer over the world, with leaves
blowing in the wind, and bees pollinating the Earth.

The wind lifts the weight off my shoulders, blowing away all the stress
of school and COVID, leaving only warmth, happiness, inside.
The trees blow fresh oxygen onto me, as if they were natural air
conditioners, making it easier to breathe,
and with each breath I begin to feel more alive.

Arnold Arboretum
The smell of fresh air is delightful as leaves clash together thanks to the wind
I saw big trees with many branches and small trees, with the aroma of vanilla
Thank you for helping me to find the purplish flower
and the bee.
Isolation from the world is what the arboretum is,
a place open 24/7-365
It is a place to really “keep calm and carry on” .
Let the trees take your worry away - and the CO? ;)

Sinceramente,
Sarah Bartels-Marrero

Dear Amigos Families,

Learning Highlights
On November 1st, the 8th graders went on a field trip to the Arnold Arboretum in Boston as part of their unit on the Carbon Cycle in a forest ecosystem. They calculated the total amount of carbon stored in many of the beautiful trees there. They also studied tree decomposition, with the carbon going back into the soil. Since the students are studying Climate Science this fall, it was important for them to be immersed in the forest, to understand the carbon cycle and the value of trees as a means to help to mitigate Climate Change.

It was a perfect day not only for Science, but also for community building. We picnicked in the Bradley Rose Garden celebrating community, friendships and the beautiful day.

Below are a few poems inspired by the Arboretum as well as some pictures from our budding photographers.

World Kindness Day
World Kindness Day is an international holiday that is observed in many countries including but not limited to the U.S., Canada, Australia, Italy, and India. The purpose of World Kindness Day as outlined by the World Kindness Movement is “to highlight good deeds in the community focusing on the positive power and the common thread of kindness which binds us.” At Amigos we plan to celebrate this day on Friday, November 12th by engaging students in meaningful discussions and activities promoting kindness in and outside of school.

Toys and Trading Cards
Please be reminded that students should not bring toys, poppers or trading cards (Pokemon or other) to school. These items are disruptive to the educational process and are often lost, broken or given away without parental permission. I thank you in advance for your support with this issue.

Community Health - Please keep your student home if they are sick!
We want students to be here as much as possible, but if they are sick, please keep them home. Coming to school sick puts all of us at risk. This is even more important now than ever. Our school nurse asks that you NOT send your child to school if he/she/they has:

  • Fever in the last 24 hours
  • Vomiting & Diarrhea
  • Persistent or worsening cough
  • Strep throat or known strep throat exposure
  • Any exposure to anyone who might have COVID-19
  • Any exposure to anyone who might have had meningitis
  • Conjunctivitis (until 24 hours after treatment)
  • Common cold
  • Flu

School Sports
Finally, I want to congratulate our upper school cross country team for their participation in the City Cross Country Championship. All of our runners performed and had a fun time!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,
Sarah Bartels-Marrero
