Dear Families,

Thank you for submitting your second semester preferences for hybrid or remote learning. We are working diligently to sort out how to accommodate as many students as possible with our limited amount of space and hope to have enrollment confirmations out to you by next week.

We have been lucky to have a fairly mild winter this year. That said, as it gets colder and snowier, please make sure that your student comes to school dressed to be outside. All students need warm coats/hats/and especially GLOVES to be outdoors for PE, recess and outside classroom time. We have noticed that many students are not properly dressed to be outdoors and in particular that many are missing gloves or mittens. If you need assistance in obtaining winter attire, please reach out to Ms. Rater and/or Ms. Bacher for help.

In preparation for the report cards being sent out at the end of the month, I want to take this opportunity to share my thoughts with you regarding grades during a world-wide pandemic. First, we have all experienced varying degrees of trauma over the past 12 months. This trauma is real and requires a focus on mental health, self-care and social/emotional learning more than anything else. Second, maintaining familiar elements of life such as grades can provide comfort, purpose and a sense of normalcy. This year in both our remote and hybrid classrooms we have tried to balance social/emotional, academic and physical needs without over-emphasizing letter and percentage grades that rarely capture the adaptability, compassion, openness, optimism, and resilience that students have shown during a time of such uncertainty and strain. With this in mind, please understand the following:

  • Due to the delayed school start and various evolving learning models, teachers will not be able to cover all the standards that are covered during a typical school year.
  • Students who attend all their remote classes are progressing and learning.
  • Attendance in both synchronous and asynchronous classes is mandatory and meaningful.
  • Emphasis has been on quality and priority standards
  • The growth mindset and academic growth reflected in rubrics, feedback and parent/teacher conferences is equally if not more important than letter grades.
If you are interested in understanding more in detail about how we are thinking about grading and report cards you can read more about JK-5 here and 6-8 here.

learning highlightsLearning Highlights

This week’s learning highlights come from Ms. Ferhani’s 8th grade Science class. You will definitely think about the role you play in climate change after reading this graphic report or watching this video on greenhouse gases! These are two of many very impressive projects brought to life by our current students.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Estimadas Familias,

Sinceramente,

Sarah Bartels-Marrero
Directora

Fight the Flu. Get Your Flu Shot!
Now more than ever, it is critically important to get a flu shot (also called seasonal flu vaccine). Flu season begins in the late fall and goes through winter, peaking between the months of December and February, but people can still get the flu as late as May. Preventing the spread of flu will limit the need for flu-related medical appointments and hospitalizations, freeing up resources to help people with COVID-19. You can make an appointment for a flu shot with either your healthcare provider or local pharmacy. Cambridge Health Alliance patients (12 - 22 years old) OR Cambridge Public Schools students (12 - 22 years old) can now receive a flu shot at the Teen Health Center located in Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. Call 617.665.1548 to schedule an appointment.
