Thankfully, student government has not been deterred by remote learning.
This week the upper school students held our Constitutional Convention and
unveiled their social contract for the 20-21 school year. During the past few
weeks our student representatives worked to create the new contract. They
proposed many ideas and democratically decided on the following
guidelines:

Contrato Social/Social Contract: 2020-2021

  1. Estar presente con todo tu corazón - Be present with your whole heart
  2. Esfuérzate en ser autosuficiente - Push yourself using self-reliance & effort.
  3. Cada voz debe ser escuchada - Everyone’s voice needs to be heard
    others by staying on task
  5. Sé cortés y valiente- Practice courtesy and be courageous.

Cambridge public school students in grades JK, K, 1, 2 and 3 are studying
orienteering in PE. Orienteering is an outdoor navigation sport, in which you
use a map to find checkpoints in a park or forest. To complement the in-
school instruction, Navigation Games will make the same or similar activities
available for families. Orienteering mini-games/PE enrichment sessions will
be put on after-school at several locations in Cambridge starting next week!
Families will be able to sign up on our website here, and we'll have
scheduled and staggered windows per family or pod.

This will be an opportunity for kids who have been orienteering with us to
practice their skills, and a fun introduction to orienteering for those who have
not gone through the unit yet— for everyone, it will hopefully be an
opportunity to have fun outdoors.

Finally this week, we have a student writer joining me to share a bit of the
student perspective on the current state of schooling. I hope you enjoy
hearing from her as much as I did!

Hi my name is Lucy and I am in 5th grade and I'm going to be giving you the opinions of some students and teachers about remote learning and more.

The first question is, how are the kids doing in remote learning? Here is the opinion of an 8th grader, Izan Fayos. He says, “I think we are taking it in pretty well. It has been a tough transition but thanks to the teachers, it has been a good new experience. Now we are using technology more than ever so we're learning more about it and how it works which is very fascinating. Also, it is a challenging transition but I love challenges. One thing I am missing is socialization at school so it made me realize how important human connections are.”

The next question is, what are the pros and cons of remote learning? Here's the opinion of a teacher in Amigos School, Lucia Rudd, first grade teacher. She thinks, “the first pro in remote learning is that there is a push for students to be more independent because the teachers are not there all the time to help them do the work. Also they are becoming problem solvers without any help from teachers. A con is that teachers are used to having more control and supporting students during all the school hours but now we can’t and it is frustrating. Another con is that it is more challenging to build human connections which is very important in our society.”

What is something you miss about in person school?
Here is what Sofia from 3rd grade said, “I deeply miss being with friends in the classroom and being able to see them in person. Also seeing the teachers and being able to experience socializing.” As many people are saying that they are missing being with friends and teachers and just being in the building itself, everybody is realizing that human interaction is very important for kids, parents and teachers.

How can we improve remote school?
Here is what Ian from 3rd grade says, “Not doing remote school and going in person, being able to understand how to use the computer further and socialization.” So, clearly lots of kids think that we need to socialize and interact with people.

Thank you, Lucy!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,
Sarah Bartels-Marrero

aprendizaje a distancia.

Contrato Social/Social Contract: 2020-2021

  1. Estar presente con todo tu corazón - Be present with your whole heart
  2. Esfuérzate en ser autosuficiente - Push yourself using self-reliance & effort.
  3. Cada voz debe ser escuchada - Everyone’s voice needs to be heard
    others by staying on task
  5. Sé cortés y valiente- Practice courtesy and be courageous.

Atentamente,
Sarah Bartels-Marrero
