Dear Families,
Thank you for all of your support and understanding as we transitioned to a hybrid learning model for some of our youngest students. This new model brought many new changes for students, families and staff but hopefully we are now all adapting. It is our hope that city health metrics stay the same or improve so that we can all have a bit of continuity in our lives.
For All Families
Over the next few weeks we will be holding our Curriculum Night and another round of Parent/Teacher conferences. Like everything else this year, our curriculum event will be very different. All teachers will be using a similar format but unfortunately there will not be an in-person event. You will receive an invitation to attend the curriculum presentation for your child directly from their teacher. If for some reason, you are unable to attend the event, we will share their presentation with you. Individual parent/family conferences will also be scheduled over the next few weeks. These will focus on individual student learning and engagement since we want to make sure that all students and families are connected and feel supported.
For the 2020-2021 school year, attendance will be recorded for all students. Regular and consistent attendance- be it virtual or in person- is essential to learning. It enhances students’ academic success and contributes to a respectful school atmosphere. The goal of the student attendance policy is to promote consistent, daily school, and class attendance. The expectation at the Amigos School is that students should have a least a 95% attendance rate in school and in class. We understand that there may be circumstances that will require a student to miss school for a day or longer. It is important that families maintain open communication with the school regarding their student’s attendance.
There are a few ways to communicate with the school regarding your remote and/or in-person student absence.
- Call the main office at 617-349-6567 ext 7 to leave a message, no later than 10 AM.
- Email your student’s teacher no later than 10:00 am, and cc Sheila M. Colon at [email protected].
- If your student is remote you still need to call and notify your student’s teacher or Amigos School Main Office.
If the school does not receive any notification by 10:00 am for the reason of absence then your child will be recorded in the school records as unexcused.
Classes start at 8:55!
Each teacher will keep an electronic record of student absences and tardies for both remote and in-person learning.
A student who enters the classroom or remote session after 8:55 a.m shall be recorded as tardy.
IF an in-person student arrives late to school, please call the office and a staff member will meet your child outside and escort them in the school. Parents/guardians will be notified of any absence and/or tardiness by a student with a computer-generated phone call.
For In Person Families
Our building continues to be a safe place for students and staff. We are all using air scrubbers, box fans and keeping windows open. Our CO2 levels continue to be at the same levels as outside readings and we have been able to have lunch and outside learning time on 6 of the 7 in person learning days. We are all also adjusting to the new directionality plans for walking around the building.
Please know that from time to time students and staff members will be sick or absent for reasons other than COVID. Please know that we will inform you of any potential concerns while also making sure we adhere to HIPPA laws. Please also make sure to use this flowchart to help you determine whether or not your child should come to school. We really appreciate that many of you, out of an abundance of care, have kept your children home when they or you are not feeling well. At this point in time, if your child is sick, they should not try to join a different remote classroom but rather participate (if able) remotely in their In-Person Google or SeeSaw classrooms. We will work out individual plans for any students requiring extended absences.
Learning Highlights: School Values
In 1st grade every Wednesday students have been assigned a Special Project involving listening to stories that highlight perseverance, compassion and integrity. Students then respond through various activities to demonstrate their understanding and/or personal connections to these values.
Social Studies lessons through Seesaw have also been an important part of weekly lessons in first grade. Again, many of these activities involve listening to stories with powerful messages on video and responding through various means: pictures, writing, and voice recordings. One that stands out is What if Everybody Did That? by Ellen Javernick in which the author uses humor to emphasize the importance of following rules and guidelines to keep us all safe and help our planet.

Gracias por todo su apoyo y comprensión durante la transición a un modelo de aprendizaje híbrido para algunos de nuestros estudiantes más jóvenes. Este nuevo modelo trajo muchos cambios nuevos para los estudiantes, las familias y el personal, pero esperamos que ahora todos nos adaptemos. Es nuestra esperanza que las métricas de salud de la ciudad permanezcan iguales o mejoren para que todos podamos tener un poco de continuidad en nuestras vidas.
Para todas las familias
En las próximas semanas tendremos nuestra Noche Curricular y otra ronda de conferencias de familias y maestr@s. Como todo lo demás este año, nuestro evento curricular será muy diferente. Todos l@s maestr@s usarán un formato similar pero desafortunadamente no habrá eventos en persona. Recibirán una invitación para asistir a la presentación curricular para su hij@ directamente de su maestro. Si por alguna razón, no pueden asistir al evento, compartiremos la presentación con ustedes por correo electrónico. También se programarán conferencias individuales para familias durante las próximas semanas. Éstas se centrarán en el aprendizaje y la participación individual de l@s estudiantes, ya que queremos asegurarnos de que todos l@s estudiantes y las familias estén conectados y se sientan apoyados.
Para el año escolar 2020-2021, se registrará la asistencia de todos l@s estudiantes. La asistencia regular y consistente, ya sea virtual o en persona, es esencial para el aprendizaje. Aumenta el éxito académico de l@s estudiantes y contribuye a una atmósfera escolar respetuosa. El objetivo de la política de asistencia de l@s estudiantes es promover la asistencia diaria y consistente a la escuela y a las clases. La expectativa de la Escuela Amigos es que l@s estudiantes tengan una tasa de asistencia de por lo menos 95% en la escuela y en las clases. Entendemos que puede haber circunstancias que requieran que un estudiante falte a la escuela por un día o más. Es importante que las familias mantengan una comunicación abierta con la escuela con respecto a la asistencia de su estudiante.
Hay algunas maneras de comunicarse con la escuela con respecto a la ausencia de un estudiante a distancia y/o en persona:
- Llame a la oficina principal al 617-349-6567 ext 7 para dejar un mensaje, no más tarde de las 10 AM.
- Envíe un correo electrónico al profesor de su estudiante a más tardar de las 10 AM, y con cc Sheila M. Colon ([email protected])
- Si su estudiante se encuentra en un lugar remoto, usted todavía necesita llamar y notificar al maestro de su estudiante o a la Oficina Principal de la Escuela Amigos.
¡Las clases comienzan a las 8:55!

Para las familias en persona
Nuestro edificio sigue siendo un lugar seguro para l@s estudiantes y el personal. Todos usamos purificadores de aire, ventiladores y mantenemos las ventanas abiertas. Nuestros niveles de CO2 siguen estando parecidos a los niveles del exterior y hemos podido almorzar y aprender afuera en 6 de los 7 días de aprendizaje presencial. También nos estamos ajustando a los nuevos planes de direccionalidad para caminar alrededor del edificio.
Por favor, sepan que de vez en cuando l@s estudiantes y los miembros del personal estarán enfermos o ausentes por razones no relacionadas con COVID. Por favor, sepan que les informaremos de cualquier preocupación potencial mientras nos aseguramos de adherirnos a las leyes de HIPAA. Por favor, también asegúrense de usar este diagrama para ayudarles a determinar si su hij@ debe venir a la escuela o no. Apreciamos enormemente que muchos de ustedes, por una abundancia de cuidados, hayan mantenido a sus hij@s en casa cuando ellos o ustedes no se sienten bien. En este momento, si su hij@ está enfermo, no debe intentar unirse a una clase remota diferente, sino participar (si puede) de forma remota en sus clases presenciales a través de Google o SeeSaw. Elaboraremos planes individuales para l@s estudiantes que requieran ausencias más largas.
Lo destacado del aprendizaje: Valores escolares
En 1er grado, cada miércoles se ha asignado a l@s estudiantes un proyecto especial que consiste en escuchar historias que destacan la perseverancia, la compasión y la integridad. L@s estudiantes responden a través de varias actividades para demostrar su comprensión y/o conexiones personales con estos valores.
Las lecciones de Estudios Sociales a través de Seesaw también han sido una parte importante de las lecciones semanales en primer grado. Una vez más, muchas de estas actividades implican escuchar historias con mensajes poderosos en video y responder a través de varios medios: imágenes, escritura y grabaciones de voz. Una que se destaca es "What if Everybody Did That?" (¿Qué pasaría si todos hicieran eso?) de Ellen Javernick, en la que la autora utiliza el humor para enfatizar la importancia de seguir las reglas y pautas para mantenernos a todos a salvo y ayudar a nuestro planeta.
