Dear Families

It has been a busy, busy week and I hope everyone is getting adjusted to the new school routine! It is great to see students connecting with their teachers and classmates. I want to thank our incredible, dedicated and committed teachers who worked and continue to work creatively in order to keep all our Jaguars engaged and learning! I also want to thank all of you, our families, who continue to support us with your kind words, thoughtful feedback, and solid effort in supporting learning at home. Thank you! This isn’t an easy moment in history but we will get through it together.

With October on the horizon, we are now very focused on and excited for the return of our in-person students on October 13th. Families whose children will be attending in person should look for additional information regarding our updated guidelines and procedures over the next weeks.

I wrote to you this summer about how we are using our school values of compassion, perseverance and integrity to guide us through these challenging times.

Compassion: We will prioritize the health and social-emotional well-being of our students, families, and staff.
Perseverance: We will not give up until we get it right and we won’t be afraid to try new things. We will start with an assumption that we all have good intentions.
Integrity: We believe that all students are inherently motivated, curious, and capable of achieving at high levels and we will maintain high expectations and rigor in our learning environments. We will stay true to our language allocation model and school mission statement that focus on bilingualism and biliteracy for all students.

We know that people are anxious and have questions about how school might be different this year. We are working to answer those questions as best we can while recognizing that we don’t have an answer for everyone or every question. I am updating weekly the information that can be found in my virtual office and we encourage you to ask us directly if you have a question. I am also including a Frequently Asked Questions section here that I hope will be helpful.

Thank you and enjoy the long weekend!

Sincerely,
Sarah Bartels-Marrero

Estimadas Familias

Sinceramente,

Sarah Bartels-Marrero

Frequently Asked Questions

I am having technical difficulties. What should I do?
Please check the “First Steps” document for sign in instructions. You can also call the school at 617-349-6567/ 617-349-6711 or reach out to the CPSD Help Desk at [email protected].

Why do we follow set schedules for students who are learning remotely?
We need to assure that students are receiving equal access to curriculum and instruction in a consistent manner. Teachers also need to provide direct live instruction during regular school hours. Schedules for remote learning and in person learning are similar so that students who will eventually be back in school together receive similar learning experiences from us.

Why are teachers working in teams?
Teachers always work in teams. We are teaming even more during these times so that we can support one another more effectively, reach students differently and be better prepared should one of our teachers be absent.

Why might my child’s teachers change? When will teacher assignments be finalized?
Amigos has a wide range of highly effective educators some of which have underlying medical conditions or other issues that might result in a change in work status. This means that your child may be assigned to an educator who is newly hired. This also means that your child may not be assigned to the teacher you originally expected. Student groups will need to be adjusted when we switch from a fully remote model to a hybrid in-person model in order to accommodate the smaller groupings required to meet in-person safety standards as well as adhere to staff contractual agreements. The change in staffing model has required the addition of teachers, and while we have made headway with hiring, we are still actively recruiting the staff needed to teach all the sections scheduled for remote and in-person learning.

Can my child opt-out of a class?

No. Students must participate in the full academic program in order to meet state expectations and expected learning outcomes.

Will in-person students and staff be required to wear masks?
Yes. Masks are an essential part of stopping the spread of Covid-19.

Can I volunteer at the school this year?
Not in person. Sadly, this year only students and staff are allowed in the building. Please check with your child’s teacher to see how you might be able to volunteer virtually.

What will the procedures look like for in-person learning?
Please look for the In-Person Amigos Teaching & Learning document that will be shared with families separately.

Preguntas frecuentes
