Dear Families

I hope you are enjoying your summer and have been able to take some time to rest, recover and rejuvenate as best as possible! I also hope that I can interrupt this time to share with you where things are right now with regards to September in the hopes of being transparent with you and receiving feedback from you.

As you know, schooling for the fall is one of the most talked about issues currently. There is no one clear path to keeping students learning, staff and students safe and families safe and able to work, and there are a lot of opinions. Hopefully, you were all recently able to respond to Superintendent Salim’s survey related to school re-opening or will be able to attend tonight’s Town Hall Meeting tonight at 6PM. The information you provide us will be of great help. I know it isn’t easy to answer questions about the future in our current environment so I really appreciate you taking the time to do so. I don’t pretend to have the right answer, if there even is one right answer, but I can tell you that I am trying to look at this from the viewpoint of a principal, a parent, a teacher and a student.

So, as we prepare for the coming school year, we do so fully recognizing that we continue to face unprecedented and challenging times--a world pandemic and powerful civic outrage against systemic racism and injustice. We understand that whatever decisions we make will be imperfect and will not satisfy everyone’s needs. However, we want you to know that we are doing our best within the current context to do so. For that reason, we want to be transparent with the priorities and non-negotiables that guide us at Amigos as we make our decisions for the 2020-21 school year. We frame these primarily under our Amigos Core Values of Compassion, Perseverance and Integrity which have been expanded to take in these extraordinary times. These expansions of meaning grew out of what we heard from staff, from students, and from you, our families.

First, we will use an equity and culturally responsive lens to inform our decisions-making and holding ourselves accountable for uncovering our implicit biases and being actively anti-racist in dismantling white supremacist structures and cultures in our school and community.

Next, we will reimagine and expand our core school values.

Core Values in School Reimagined:

– Compassion: We will prioritize the health and social-emotional well-being of our students, families, and staff.

– Perseverance: We will not give up until we get it right and we won’t be afraid to try new things. We will start with an assumption that we all have good intentions.

– Integrity: We believe that all students are inherently motivated, curious, and capable of achieving at high levels and we will maintain high expectations and rigor in our learning environments. We will stay true to our language allocation model and school mission statement that focus on bilingualism and biliteracy for all students.

Espero que estén disfrutando de su verano y que hayan podido tomarse un tiempo para descansar, recuperarse y rejuvenecerse lo mejor posible. También espero poder interrumpir este tiempo para compartir con ustedes dónde están las cosas en este momento con respecto a septiembre con la esperanza de ser transparente con ustedes y recibir feedback de ustedes.

Como saben, el plan escolar para el otoño es uno de los temas de los que más se habla actualmente. No hay un camino claro para mantener el aprendizaje de l@s estudiantes, la salud de la facultad y l@s alumn@s ni la salud y horario laboral de las familias, y hay muchas opiniones. Espero que todos ustedes hayan podido responder recientemente a la encuesta del Superintendente Salim relacionada a la reapertura de la escuela o podrán asistir a la reunión del ayuntamiento esta noche a las 6PM. La información que nos proporcionan será de gran ayuda. Sé que no es fácil responder a las preguntas sobre el futuro en nuestro contexto actual, así que realmente aprecio que se tomen el tiempo para hacerlo. No pretendo tener la respuesta correcta, si es que hay una respuesta correcta, pero puedo decirles que estoy tratando de ver esto desde el punto de vista de directora, madre, maestra y estudiante.

Así pues, al prepararnos para el próximo año escolar, lo hacemos reconociendo plenamente que seguimos enfrentándonos a tiempos difíciles y sin precedentes: una pandemia mundial y una poderosa indignación cívica contra el racismo y la injusticia sistémicos. Entendemos que cualquier decisión que tomemos será imperfecta y no satisfacerá las necesidades de todos. Sin embargo, queremos que sepan que estamos haciendo todo lo posible en el contexto actual para hacerlo. Por esa razón, queremos ser transparentes con las prioridades que nos guían en Amigos mientras tomamos nuestras decisiones para el año académico 2020-21 y más allá. Los enmarcamos principalmente bajo nuestros valores centrales de Compasión, Perseverancia e Integridad, que se han ampliado para abarcar estos tiempos extraordinarios. Estas expansiones de significado crecieron de lo que escuchamos del personal, de l@s estudiantes, y de ustedes, nuestras familias.

Primero, usaremos un lente de equidad sensible a las diferentes culturas para informar nuestras decisiones y hacernos responsables de descubrir nuestros prejuicios implícitos y ser activamente antirracistas en desmantelar las estructuras y culturas de la supremacía blanca en nuestra escuela y comunidad.

Segundo, re-imaginaremos y expandiremos nuestros valores escolares básicos.

Valores escolares reimaginados:

– Compasión: Priorizaremos la salud y el bienestar socio-emocional de nuestros estudiantes, familias y personal.

– Perseverancia: No nos daremos por vencidos hasta que lo hagamos bien y no tendremos miedo de probar cosas nuevas. Empezaremos con la suposición de que todos tenemos buenas intenciones.

– Integridad: Creemos que todos l@s estudiantes están intrínsecamente motivados, son curiosos y capaces de alcanzar altos niveles y mantendremos altas expectativas y rigor en nuestros ambientes de aprendizaje. Nos mantendremos fieles a nuestro modelo de idiomas y a la misión de la escuela que se centra en el bilingüismo y la bi-alfabetización de tod@s l@s estudiantes.
