Dear Families
June 1 comes to us with clouds overhead even though the skies may seem clear. Once again this past week we experienced the unnecessary loss of black life at the hands of a police officer. Once again, we hear, see and experience the pain of racial inequality in this country. These past few weeks and months have not only shown the disproportionate impact of Covid-19 on communities of color but we have continued to see criminal brutality towards people of color at the hands of police and so-called white vigilantes. Like so many of you, I am outraged by what I have seen on the news. I have cried, I have been scared, I have felt helpless. But more than anything, I feel even more committed to the anti-racist work we are doing as a school and a district. We have a long way to go with this work but we have taken the first steps and I invite you today to further commit to this work.
As an educator and a parent, I want to encourage our community to reflect on what is happening and what our role is in combating racism and pushing the long overdue systemic change this country needs. One person that I heard speaking over the weekend made the point that if we are not speaking to our children about what is happening in the world, someone else most certainly is. They all know more about what is going on than we might think. For this reason, I urge you to have developmentally appropriate talks with your children about what we are living, seeing and feeling. While some of us may have the privilege of turning off the news, many of us do not and so we have the responsibility of doing this work with ourselves and our young people. Sadly, this week’s events are the most recent in a long list but I truly believe that we are either racist or anti-racist, there is no in between. With this in mind, I want you to know that tonight the city will be holding a virtual vigil in memory of George Floyd that you may want to attend. I am also including a few resources here that you may find helpful when talking about race with your children.
For adults interested in deepening their thinking on the subject, I also highly recommend the books “How to be an Anti-Racist” by Ibram X. Kendi and “White Fragility” by Robin DiAngelo. For middle school students, I recommend the book “Stamped” by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X Kendi. This is a remixed version for youth of Kendi’s best seller “Stamped from the Beginning”. My oldest son and I read this together during our early quarantine days and it has helped us to have some very poignant conversations about recent events.
As I have said before, our bilingualism and multiculturalism are essential to understanding and improving the complex world in which we live. I certainly don’t have all the answers or even many of them, but I am dedicated to learning, growing and changing with all of you. We know that now more than ever we must create positive, equitable and welcoming environments where our young people can thrive. We must “be the change we want to see in the world”.

El 1 de junio nos llega con nubes por encima aunque los cielos parecen despejados. Una vez más experimentamos la innecesaria pérdida de vida negra a manos de un oficial de policía. Una vez más, oímos, vemos y sentimos el dolor de la desigualdad racial en este país. Estas últimas semanas y meses no sólo han mostrado el impacto desproporcionado del Covid-19 en las comunidades de color, sino que hemos seguido viendo la brutalidad criminal hacia las personas de color a manos de la policía y las supuestas "vigilancias blancas". Como muchos de ustedes, estoy indignada por lo que he visto en las noticias. He llorado, he tenido miedo, me he sentido impotente. Pero más que nada, me siento aún más comprometida con el trabajo antirracista que estamos haciendo como escuela y como distrito. Tenemos un largo camino por recorrer con este trabajo pero hemos dado los primeros pasos y los invito hoy a comprometerse aún más con este trabajo.
Como educadora y madre, quiero animar a nuestra comunidad a reflexionar sobre lo que está sucediendo y cuál es nuestro papel en la lucha contra el racismo y en la promoción del cambio sistémico que este país necesita. Un experto que escuché hablar durante el fin de semana señaló que si no estamos hablando a nuestros hijos sobre lo que está sucediendo en el mundo, sin duda alguien más lo está haciendo. Por esta razón, los insto a tener conversaciones (apropiadas para el desarrollo) con sus hijos sobre lo que estamos viviendo, viendo y sintiendo. Mientras que algunos de nosotros podemos tener el privilegio de apagar las noticias, muchos de nosotros no lo podemos hacer y por lo tanto tenemos la responsabilidad de hacer este trabajo con nosotros mismos y con nuestros jóvenes. Lamentablemente, los eventos de esta semana son los más recientes de una larga lista, pero creo sinceramente que somos racistas o antirracistas, no hay nada intermedio. Con esto en mente, quiero que sepan que esta noche la ciudad realizará una vigilia virtual en memoria de George Floyd a la que podrán asistir. También incluyo aquí algunos recursos que pueden ser útiles cuando hablen de raza con sus hijos.
Para los adultos, también recomiendo los libros "Cómo ser un Antirracista" de Ibram X. Kendi y "Fragilidad Blanca" de Robin DiAngelo. Para los estudiantes de intermedia, recomiendo el libro "Stamped" de Jason Reynolds e Ibram X Kendi. Esta es una versión remezclada para jóvenes del best seller de Kendi, "Estampado desde el principio". Mi hijo mayor y yo lo leímos juntos durante nuestros primeros días de cuarentena y nos ha ayudado a tener algunas conversaciones muy conmovedoras sobre los recientes eventos.
Como he dicho antes, nuestro bilingüismo y multiculturalismo son esenciales para entender y mejorar el complejo mundo en el que vivimos. Ciertamente no tengo todas las respuestas o incluso muchas de ellas, pero me dedico a aprender, crecer y cambiar con todos ustedes. Sabemos que ahora más que nunca debemos crear entornos positivos, equitativos y tolerantes donde nuestros jóvenes puedan prosperar. Debemos "ser el cambio que queremos ver en el mundo".
