Dear Families

In this week’s newsletter…. Intramural success, Desayuno con la directora, Building Equity Bridges, Parent Dance and After School Registration.

I am thrilled to announce that our Upper School Girls Volleyball Team won the City-wide championship this past Wednesday! All of our volleyball players had a tremendous season and I thank Coach Litten for her hard work as well. We now have two consecutive championship wins in boys volleyball, one in girls volleyball and one in boys soccer! I am excited to keep this momentum going! Upper school basketball started yesterday and we are lucky to have our own school resource officer, Officer Ortiz, as our head coach. Officer Ortiz has coached basketball for many years and we really appreciate him taking on this role.

We had a successful first Desayuno con la directora this morning. I want to thank the families that were able to attend today. I really appreciate hearing your ideas and spending time together. If you couldn’t make it today, we hope that you will be able to make it to the next one. Today we discussed issues of equity, school security, and parental community building.

On the topic of equity, we have two parents of a Amigos 1st grader, Amara Donovan and Emanuel Antunes, who are part of the Building Equity Bridges team. “The Building Equity Bridges project is a joint effort between the Cambridge Public Schools and the Cambridge Education Association, funded by the Nellie Mae Foundation, to facilitate a comprehensive, and transparent process to uncover the root causes of inequities in the Cambridge Public Schools” (CPS website).

At the Cambridge School Committee meeting at CRLS on Tuesday, January 21st at 6PM, two Building Equity Bridges team members who are also members of the School Committee will put forth a motion for Cambridge Public Schools to officially become an Antiracist school district. Amara and Emanuel are putting out a call for action for families of color to attend the meeting. If you would like to attend, you can contact Amara and/or Emanuel for more information and/or regarding childcare. You can also find out more information about Building Equity Bridges HERE.

Don’t forget that our Third Annual PARENT Dance will be held on Friday, February 7! DJ Battisimus is ready to honor your song requests and some upper school students have agreed to assist in childcare for siblings (in a limited capacity) here at the school while you dance the night away! All parents/guardians are invited not just those with upper school students. Please RSVP via the following link: Amigos Parent Dance RSVP.

Finally, please make a note that Spring Registration for the Amigos Community School will take place next week according to the following schedule:

Estimadas Familias

We are MIT SHINE, a team of women MIT students looking to help young girls discover their passion for math. Our program is a once-weekly, 2.5 hour session on MIT's campus, during which the girls will dance, play games, and do math one-on-one with a mentor. The SHINE curriculum is flexible and designed to allow girls to work at a level that is appropriate and interesting for them. We have had extremely positive reviews from girls and parents alike, and we hope to grow SHINE even more in the coming semester.
