Estimadas Familias

Respetarte a ti mismo 2.

Atentamente,

Sarah Bartels-Marrero
Directora

Dear Families

sarahIt has been a fantastically busy week here at Amigos! It was so great to see all our returning students and families while also meeting our newest members to the community.

This week our staff has been dedicated to creating classroom environments where all students feel safe and cared for as well as working on the routines and norms that will help all students do their best work. Our overarching guidelines are to be safe and be kind. Our building-wide behavior expectations are 1. Respect yourself 2. Respect others and 3. Respect property. You can find a graphic version of our school-wide rules here, and we hope that you will review them with your student. Also, your child should come home with an Amigos folder. This folder will help with communication between us and you and may contain important notices, flyers and/or homework!

For families and students who are new to dual immersion, please know that we are all here to answer any questions you might have. During this first month of school, your child might feel a bit tired and maybe even frustrated since learning in two languages every day is challenging cognitive work. Try to encourage them, be positive and ask about what they like most about school. Your positive attitude can be one of the most significant factors in your child adjusting well to the school.

Next Wednesday at 6 pm, we have our first Amigos School Council meeting. The Amigos Council is comprised of parents and faculty that work as an advisory group for school administration. I believe we may be looking for new members to join us this year, so if you are interested in participating, I hope you will stop by.

This year we are up to 434 students enrolled in Amigos, our largest enrollment yet! With this in mind, if you pick up your child, I ask that you please help us maintain safe and clear hallways. You can do this by standing against the wall instead of in the middle of the hallway. We have a lot of students who take the bus and if there are too many people standing in the way it can be difficult for them to get by.

With the safety and security of all our students in mind, I want to offer a review of our arrival and dismissal procedures.

Arrival
School hours are 8:55 A.M. – 2:55 PM and classes start at 8:55. Any student arriving after 8:55 will need to check in at the main office. Students may arrive as early as 7:30 AM and report to the cafeteria where the before school program is held. At 8:10 AM, the gym or playground areas are open with supervision for grades 1 - 8. On rainy and cold days 1st graders will stay in the cafeteria. All Kindergarten students must go directly to the cafeteria if they arrive before 8:40 and directly to their classrooms after 8:40. The first bell rings at 8:40 AM whereby all students are dismissed from the cafeteria, park or gym to their homeroom. Parents of students in Kindergarten and 1st grade can accompany their children to the classrooms. We ask that parents of students in grades 2 -8 say goodbye at the main entrance.

Dismissal
At 2:55 the dismissal bell for students who walk home rings, walkers in JK-1 stay in their classrooms and their adult can meet them there. Walkers in grades 2 and 3 will go to the cafeteria and their adult can meet them there. Walkers in grades 4-8 leave and walk themselves home or meet their adult at the front of the building. All students who ride a bus will remain in their classrooms until their bus is called at which point they will go directly to the bus. Once students have been dismissed they should not re-enter the building unless they are participating in an after school activity. The doors will be locked at 3:15.

If you need to make special arrangements for your child, please contact the main office no later than 2:30 pm on that day.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Sarah Bartels-Marrero
Principal

Reminders /
Recordatorios

Please remember:

Classroom instruction starts at 8:55AM. Beginning at this time, important learning takes place each day. While students are required to be at school by 8:55AM, we strongly encourage families to have their children arrive at 8:40 in order to maximize learning time. Students taking the bus arrive between 8:20 and 8:35 barring any unexpected circumstances.

There is no parking in front of the school during arrival and dismissal. Buses need to load and unload, and cannot do so if cars are parked there.
