Estimadas familias,

Sinceramente,

Sarah Bartels-Marrero
Directora

Dear Families,

Not surprisingly, there is a significant body of research that demonstrates the importance of relationships in schools. Strong relationships between students and staff members are known to positively affect student learning outcomes and self-esteem. One of our goals as a school is to make sure that each student has at least one person in the building who they would consider a “trusted adult”. This could be any staff member in the building, not necessarily the student’s current teacher or teaching team. Our hope is that our students know they have someone who is looking out for them, as well as someone who can listen to them and offer support to them should they need it. On the 2017 MGHS Health Survey 69% of students at Amigos reported having a teacher or adult in the school with whom they could talk about a problem. We believe that by focusing on relationships, we will be able to increase that percentage significantly.

Just last week, I was able to attend the Spring Seminar for New England Immersion School Administrators. We were fortunate enough to spend time with Tara Williams Fortune. Dr. Fortune is an immersion teaching specialist and director of the Immersion Research and Professional Development Program at the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) at the University of Minnesota. It was exciting to be with other immersion principals and to hear some of the latest research related to immersion!

The Multistate Association for Bilingual Education (MABE) also holds its annual conference each March. This year the conference is being held at the Nathaneal Greene School in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. As part of the conference, Amigos will be opening its doors to MABE attendees on March 20th. We will also be sending a team of teachers to attend the conference on Saturday, March 24. Families should know that the conference is open to parents, guardians and caregivers as well. Please let me know if you would like to attend the conference.

The online auction for the 8th grade trip to NYC has already raised $5,425 in its first week thanks to families of Amigos students and alumni! There is still $3,000 to raise to make up the necessary funds to let ALL the 8th graders attend the trip. Please visit the auction website to view all the amazing items, from gift certificates to culinary adventures!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Sarah Bartels-Marrero
Principal
