sarahDear Families,

Welcome to March! We have a lot to share with you in this week’s newsletter.

Next week, March 4th through March 8th, we will be celebrating National School Breakfast Week to promote school breakfast across the district. The national theme is 'Start Your Engines' with school breakfast, with a race car design to emphasize fueling up in the morning. You are invited to join your child for breakfast at the school. Tuesday is Pancakes with Parents day and you can enjoy a meal for just $1.00!

Every year, each public school and school district in Massachusetts receives a report card. Just as your child’s report card shows how they are doing in different subjects, the school’s report card is designed to show families how our school is doing in different areas. If you are interested in learning more about our report card and how our school is performing, I invite you to read more here.

One of our parents, Beatriz Gil Gómez de Liano, in conjunction with the Visual Attention Lab of Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, and the University of Cambridge, is conducting a research study with children that investigates how various attentional and cognitive processes influence visual search behavior in children from 4 to 17 years old. Dr. Gil Gómez de Liano will be holding a discussion about her project on Monday, March 4 from 6:30 to 7:30PM in the Amigos library. If you are interested in learning more about this study and/or having your child participate, I invite you to attend.

Students and parents have been actively fundraising for the 8th grade capstone trip to New York City. For three days and two nights, our 8th graders explore the cultural heritage of different Hispanic immigrant groups through museum visits in Spanish, exploration of Spanish Harlem, restaurant adventures, theater highlights ("La casa de Bernarda Alba") and salsa lessons. The online auction, going live today Friday, March 1st and ending on Sunday, March 17th, will make up the necessary funds to let ALL the 8th graders attend the trip. We still need to raise $8,500 to make this trip possible! Please visit the auction website to view all the amazing items, from gift certificates to culinary adventures!

Our yearly Multicultural Night is coming up at the end of March. Participation seems to be down this year, so if you are willing and able to get involved, I encourage you to do so. Please contact Ana Realpe ASAP if you would like to set up a table representing your country of origin or you would like to help at the event.

Finally, please be reminded that there is no parking in the bus lane in front of the school during arrival and dismissal times. It may seem like just a few minutes but it makes for a more challenging arrival. Our buses need to load and unload, and cannot do so safely if cars are parked or idling in the bus lane.

Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,

Sarah Bartels-Marrero

Estimadas familias:

¡Bienvenidos a marzo!

Atentamente,

Sarah Bartels-Marrero
Directora
