Dear Families,

As a school located in the Central Square neighborhood, I urge you to read the communication sent by the superintendent and the Cambridge Police last night. Safety is always our top concern and at Amigos, we have many students that walk daily to and from school. Please remind your children not to talk to strangers and review how they might handle potentially dangerous situations.

While we understand the joy and often the necessity of travel, this year there have been an unprecedented number of students absent before and/or after regularly scheduled vacations. While any absence can affect student grades, extended vacations have the potential to really impact student learning. It can be hard for students to make up missed work and even when they make up work, they have missed valuable and explicit instructional time. Their absences may also impact the rest of the class and group projects. If you are planning to travel for an extended period of time, the principal and classroom teachers must be notified in advance of travel dates. Any trip longer than ten school days requires sabbatical papers to be filled and submitted to the superintendent in order to avoid a potential withdrawal from the school.

One of our favorite programs at Amigos is our Reading Buddies program. Students from upper and lower grades are paired together to enjoy reading and listening to texts in both English and Spanish. It is always fantastic to see them huddled together in the classrooms or sometimes even the hallways. When students meet with their buddy, they enjoy wonderful books, form new friendships and ask questions such as “Who is your favorite character, Where do you like to read?, and What inspires you?” If you have yet to hear about this program from your student, please don’t forget to ask.

Have a wonderful vacation!

Sincerely,

Sarah Bartels-Marrero
Principal

Estimadas familias,

Atentamente,

Sarah Bartels-Marrero
Directora
