Amigos
  4 de enero de 2019 / January 4, 2019
Sarah

Estimadas familias,

Atentamente,

Sarah Bartels-Marrero
Directora

Dear Families,

Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful winter break and that you are looking forward to 2019.

One thing I would like to highlight in this week’s newsletter is our upcoming ASC meeting. On January 9 from 6-7PM our regular school council meeting will be held. However, from 7-8 PM we will be learning more about the district’s draft proposal to improve elementary and upper school school schedules. A draft proposal, which will be released on Monday, January 7 via email and on www.cpsd.us, will include a proposed lengthening of the school day.

I hope you can join us to hear a presentation by Deputy Superintendent Turk about the draft proposal and engage in a conversation to gather your feedback. I invite you to send specific questions to me in advance or to submit your questions via the form that will available on the website with the proposal.

With the safety of all members of our community in mind, I’d like to remind you that there are restrooms for students and adults. There are three adult restrooms; one in the nurse's office, one on the second floor and one in the basement next to the conference room. No adult should use the student restrooms. We also ask that all visitors please register and obtain a visitor's pass at the office.

Sincerely,

Sarah Bartels-Marrero
Principal

All About the Brain

Our Amigos 3rd graders (as well as some others) enjoyed learning about brains today! One student stated, "it was interesting to touch a brain. creepy, but interesting"! Thank you to Andrew Frishman and Leigh Needleman for helping make this happen.

Rindge Avenue Upper Campus Presents
Speaker Series for Parents
Friday, January 25, 2019 | 6 - 8PM
Nearly half of students in grades 7-12 reported experiencing sexual harassment in the previous year and 87% describe negative effects such as absenteeism and poor sleep. And more than ever before, socializing, exploring identity, and dating often occur between texts and social media, raising new challenges and positive opportunities. How can we as parents mentor our children to engage in healthy behaviors? How can we foster their confidence and capacity to solve problems and build their independence, while at the same time providing appropriate support and supervision as adults? If you have a child currently in grade 6-9 AND/OR this information would be beneficial for you, we invite you to join us. Participate in this interactive workshop and come away with new resources, skills and perspectives for you and your family. View the Flyer >>

Learning & Professional Time
Like any other resource, schools must use their time wisely if we hope to realize the promise of educational equity through rigorous, joyful, and culturally responsive experiences for all learners.

In 2017-18, a joint group of educators and administrators, co-chaired by leaders from the Cambridge Education Association (CEA) and CPS Office of Curriculum and Instruction recommended that CPS “lengthen the standard day for students and staff at all levels.” After an extensive collaborative process, the Superintendent of Schools has decided to propose a moderate increase to the 6 hour elementary and upper school day, along with guidelines for effectively meeting the educational, developmental, and social-emotional needs of students.
