A Huge Success

Morse’s Annual International Night:
A Huge Success!
Submitted by: Brian Funck, parent
International Night was a giant party once again! With over 125 students, their families and some staff with their families in attendance. It began with a huge potluck featuring delicious food from around the world. Students received passports and “traveled” the school to play games, train for the World Cup, and create a collaborative watercolor world map. The evening ended with an Indonesian dance troupe in the Auditorium, comprised of Cambridge residents and students, and led by Morse parents Dhini and Yodha Purnamasari. The audience was stunned to learn that Indonesia is made up of over 17,000 islands! If you didn’t have a chance to attend, please plan on joining in the fun next year!

Kindergarten
STEAM Learning
Submitted By: Therese Bellino, Kindergarten
Teacher, Room D6
D6-Kindergarten students worked on a STEAM project for more than a week focussing on frogs.

Science:
Students learned about the life cycle of frogs, beginning with the laying of eggs in the water which develop into tadpoles, then become froglets and finally frogs!

Technology: Students did research on Pebble go and listened to real frog sounds and learned there are thousands of types of frogs.

Engineering: Students learned about how frogs can swim, and leap using their strong back legs then played leap frog games.

Art and Math: Students identified shapes on a worksheet and colored them in while referencing photos of real frogs. Students cut and pasted their shapes to make their own frogs. Come visit D6-Kindergarten to see our Bulletin Board!

Ready, Set, Go! The Morse O
By Nowshin and Freddie
On Friday, October 19th, at 8:45AM, the fifth grade did the Morse O. The Morse O is a project that the fifth grade does. The O stands for orienteering. Orienteering is a sport where you orient a map to find controls. You are timed, and you have to go from one control to the others. The fifth grade does the Morse O around the Morse school. The way we are timed is with fobs that we beep at the beginning and end of the trip. Although, there are a few controls called decoys. Decoys are controls that have the wrong number, so you have to orient your map so that you can see which control you are supposed to go to, without wasting time. It looks easy, but with all of the running that you have to do, everyone is pretty beat after a few tries around the course.

Some F.A.Q’s are the following:
Question: How long does it usually take to do a course?Answer: It depends on the course. The Morse O usually takes between 2-4 minutes.

Question: Where do you start, and where do you end?Answer: No matter what course you are doing, you always start at the triangle symbol on the map. You usually end at the triangle as well, but for the Morse O, it was different.

Morse Grade 5 Orienteering
Morse O

Morse O is where you have to orienteer. Orienteering is where you orient a map to find destinations. We have fobs to scan a device. We also have partners. We started early in the morning. There are ten controls, so you have to go to each one. There are a lot of decoys that distract you. So try not to get distracted. When you get to the end someone an adult of course will give you a ticket which says if you skipped a control and how much time it took you to get to the end. You better be fast!

Morse Pajama Day
Cozy Spirit Day October 5 in class E7, By: Evan S.
As soon as you walked into the classroom it was like going to bed all over again. Many people wearing funny and cozy pajamas. Ms. Jeram brought in a surprise. A bunch of her favorite cereal with gallons of milk. Everyone in the classroom of E7’s mouths dropped into silence. Then all of E7 shouted thank you Ms. Jeram. There was a twist then Dr. Leith walked right on into the party.

We all laughed in a fun way about Dr. Leith’s pajamas, he was Eeyore. Then he joined in on the cereal party. Dr.Leith was having a blast, it was as if Dr. Leith lived through his his childhood again. The cereal of choice was Froot Loops, Captain Crunch, and favorite of choice Frosted Flakes. Then Ms. Elaine and Mrs. Headley joined into the fun.

The first day of apple cider went well!
There were a few visitors found who are very photogenic and have been relocated to safe locations away from our garden! Tobacco hornworms (who also love tomatoes)!

Vocab
Coach's Corner
Keep the words active at home.
Vocabulary is very important across the curriculum, from literacy to math and music to technology. This year to support our students in building a rich vocabulary, two new words will be chosen and introduced each month for their high level impact in all subject areas.

November's words are: categorize and elaborate

CATEGORIZE: to group things that are similar
ELABORATE: giving lots of details

Research shows that kids need to “see, hear, and interact with words at least 5-7 times before it is admitted into long term memory.” So here are some tips and ideas to help your child more easily learn these and other vocabulary words.

Tips for Learning New Vocabulary:

  1. Draw a picture of it.
  2. Act it out.
  3. Write your own definition of the word.
  4. Think of an example sentence to use it in.
  5. Use it as much as possible.

Keep the words active at home.
Check out the FAB VOCAB BULLETIN BOARD in the lobby and add your thinking to the Chalk Talk Chart around this big idea: WHY IS A RICH VOCABULARY IMPORTANT TO YOUR CHILD’S SUCCESS?

Time to Learn

Quality Learning and Professional Time
Studies conducted last year, and meetings with diverse stakeholders since, have raised concerns about the amount and quality of learning and professional time in Cambridge Public Schools. CPS is in the midst of a study and design process examining a range of options for improving learning and professional time, with an initial focus on elementary and Upper School schedules.

View the latest updates on this process on the CPS website, and save the dates for the following Public Forums:

December 5 | 6PM | Morse School
January 10 | 6PM | Kennedy-Longfellow School
January 12 | 10AM | Graham & Parks School

The Superintendent will develop a proposal that will be shared for stakeholder feedback in January. In addition to the public forums, school-based meetings are being scheduled for all schools. Any changes in school schedules will benefit from a full planning year in 2019-20 before implementation in 2020-2021.

Cambridge Bicycle Safety
Does your child bike to school? Do you bike with your child to school? Would you or your child like to get around by bike but feel it is not safe?

Cambridge Bicycle Safety is an all-volunteer group of Cambridge residents who are asking for safer bike lanes and a complete network of protected lanes throughout Cambridge. Separated lanes in the last two years--Cambridge, Brattle and sections of Mass Ave--have been the result of people in the community organizing. But we need more voices.
We are looking for stories of parents and their children who bike or would like to bike. If you have a story and want to learn more, email us.
