Dear Families,
A few weeks ago I shared with you the news that our student, Isabella Lozada, had won the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) Middle School Student of the Year Award. This week I am thrilled to share with you the news that another one of our 8th grade students has won the Multistate Association for Bilingual Education (MABE) Essay of the Year Award. Miranda Santiago, won this award with her essay about what being bilingual means to her. This is a great achievement and she will receive her award during the MABE Conference in Somerville on March 24. Two other students, Siroun Johnson and Camila Tedesco, also won second and third place. Please join me in congratulating these three students!
On March 14th, there is a planned National School Walkout. The sponsor, the Women’s March’s Youth EMPOWER group, is encouraging teachers, students, administrators, parents and allies to walk out for 17 minutes — one for every person killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on that day at 10:00 AM one month ago.
At Amigos, our 6th, 7th and 8th grade students, as well as some staff, have shared with me their interest in participating in this walkout. We plan to honor the memories of the victims by observing 17 minutes of silence in front of the building at 10:00AM. After meeting with teachers, they felt that this would be the most authentic and appropriate engagement given the mixed age of our students. We recognize that in the younger grades there will be a difference in awareness about the shootings and the aftermath. If you are interested in joining your student in this walkout, you are welcome to meet us in the front courtyard at 10:00. We will return to our regular academic schedule following this moment of silence. Our school counselors will be available to assist with any students for further conversations and we will continue to follow the directive of the Superintendent as outlined in his community emails.
This week we welcomed our new full time nurse, Tamara Smith. Ms. Smith has been a nurse for 23 years and a school nurse for the past ten years. She attended Holyoke Community College and Chamberlain School of Nursing. Nurse Smith brings a wealth of experience and is very excited to be here. Please join me in giving her a warm welcome to our Amigos community.
I hope to see you tomorrow at Multicultural Night!
Sincerely,
Sarah Bartels-Marrero

Estimadas familias,
Atentamente,
Sarah Bartels-Marrero
