Safety on Ice-Covered Ponds,
Streams & Rivers

It’s important to make sure your children know not to walk out on ice that forms on streams, rivers and larger bodies of water. The water in the Charles River and MOST local waterways is never frozen enough to risk walking on. Though it appears to be frozen, the water beneath the ice is moving, creating thin spots. In addition, warm waters flowing into the river also create thin spots, where people and animals can fall through to the frigid water. To be safe use any of the skating rinks that are available throughout the city or use designated skating areas on ponds.
