A Note from Principal Tony Byers
School tours began last month. As principal, my job is to greet parents at the end of the tour and answer questions. School tours of this sort don’t happen in most school districts, and I certainly hadn’t participated in a process like this before, so I was curious about what kind of questions I’d get after prospective parents had seen the school in action. Important Reminder: Sibling Enrollment
Sibling surveys went home in November. If you need one please let us know. This survey is to help us compile a list of families who may have JK or K students entering Graham & Parks in the fall of 2015. We do this so we can provide you with registration packets and invite you to take advantage of the opportunity to register here at the family liaison's office. Learn more >>
Anyone Can Learn to Code!
In a world where much of what we touch has been programmed, is it time that we understand some of what is “going on under the hood” so to speak? In December, Graham and Parks students will participate in “An Hour of Code” using tutorials (from the non-profit foundation code.org) on visual and non-visual programming languages such as Scratch, Lightbot and even Javascript. We will discuss computational thinking, problem solving, digital confidence, and most importantly, why we should learn to code. Learning to code gives students the power to create and innovate the world around them and opens the door to some of the most creative careers available. Students at Graham and Parks will all use a tutorial covering basic computational thinking and then will be encouraged to explore other tutorials that allow more room for creative thinking. Our hope is not that every student will want to take on a career as a programmer, but that every student will understand that he or she is capable of creating amazing things through code!
Cold Weather – Staying Warm & Safe
