Estimadas familias,

Atentamente,

Sarah Bartels-Marrero
Directora

Dear Families,

It is with bittersweet emotions that I formally share with you the retirements of Ms. Kathy Conlon and Ms. Linda Schwetz.

Ms. Conlon has been one of our 4th grade teachers for over 10 years. She is a dedicated practitioner and a thoughtful colleague. She began her career in the Cambridge Public Schools in 1988. Prior to Amigos, Ms. Conlon worked at the Kennedy School, the Harrington School, the Fitzpatrick School and the King School. Throughout the years, she has worked as a 1st grade teacher, 3rd grade teacher, inclusion specialist and, of course, a 4th grade teacher. We thank her for the attention and care she has given to each and everyone of our Amigos students.

Ms. Schwetz, better known as Ms. Linda, has been at Amigos for almost thirty years. She is well known for her enthusiasm and love of using songs and drama to engage students in bilingual learning. She has had many roles at Amigos from reading specialist to 1st grade teacher and she was even once a middle school teacher. She also began her career in the Cambridge Public Schools in 1988. We thank her for the love of language and learning that she has instilled in generations of Amigos students.

This week Ms. Luisa’s first grade class, with the help of Ms. Linda, presented four plays to friends and family. The plays included: Los 3 chivos vivos, El cuento verdadero, La leyenda Maya Papagayo, and a bilingual version of El hada de dientes/El ratón Pérez. Some of the universal themes included how we can work together to find solutions and the importance of being bilingual. The students memorized lines, projected their voices and engaged in theater to support language development. It was a great success!

Finally, our garden is open again! Our garden coordinator, Solomon Montagno, is back and has begun working with students and teachers. The 8th graders have been observing and drawing the peas in the garden as part of their genetics unit and work Mendel’s experiments. We hope you too will stop by to see what is growing.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Sarah Bartels-Marrero
Principal
