Dear Families,

In the weeks before break, students in grades one, four, six, and eight spent an hour learning computer programming as part of the Hour of Code initiative, which provides coding environments suitable even for the youngest students. Working with David Albert, our Instructional Technology Specialist, first graders programmed a robot to move around a screen collecting scrap metal. Working in pairs, students solved challenges and learned how to program a simple video game; they can continue these activities at home at http://code.org/starwars on almost any Internet-connected device. Fourth graders began a multi-week programming project using Scratch, a programming language developed at MIT. They will spend the next few weeks of computer lab time programming a complex game. For sixth and eighth grade activities, check the next Upper School newsletter.

This Wednesday, we had an all school assembly on “Growth Mindset”. Growth Mindset is the belief that we can get smarter or better at something through hard work and practice. The students got to hear from one another about how they are learning and growing this year and from different adults who are using growth mindset in their lives. We also heard a newly composed Amigos song written by Eighth grader Victoria Heitzmann. It was a great assembly! To learn more about Growth Mindset, listen to Carol Dweck’s Ted Talk “The Power of Believing That You Can Improve”.

Have a wonderful long weekend!

Sincerely,

Sarah Bartels-Marrero

Estimadas familias,

Para aprender más sobre “Crecimiento Mental”, escuche a Carol Dweck en su Ted Talk “The Power of Believing That You Can Improve”.

¡Qué tengan un fin de semana maravillosos!

Sinceramente,

Sarah Bartels-Marrero
