Dear Families,

Welcome to May! Let’s hope that the flowers and sunshine are not too far away!

This week, we had a successful Math Crazy 8’s Night with our first graders. Our students spent time working in teams as they participated in the Toilet Paper Olympics Workshop. During this workshop, students measure a variety of objects, including themselves, with toilet paper squares and develop their understanding of counting, estimation, measurement and addition. Who knew toilet paper could be used to teach so much math!?

The Amigos School is a well-known member of the Cambridge community. From time to time we are invited to perform at different venues. As part of the performance and presentation practice we hope to offer our students, we usually accept these invitations. Recently it was brought to my attention that not all of our families feel included when we perform at events held in different religious institutions. It is important to us that all of our families feel included and, moving forward, we will be re-evaluating all of our off-site performances to ensure that all members of our community feel comfortable and included. I do want to clarify, that we have a community partnership with the Pentecostal Tabernacle on Magazine Street. They have been supporting us with the use of their hall so that different class events have a larger space to use since space is at a premium in our building. We plan to continue this community partnership while also taking care to promote inclusion and diversity.

I also want to take a moment today to congratulate one of our 8th graders, Nico Mayer. She is a runner-up in the New York Times Student Editorial contest for her piece, "The Question up for Debate: Is Feminism Really for Everyone?" This is a wonderful accomplishment for Nico, and I hope you take the time to read her insightful essay. Nico's essay >>

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Sarah Bartels-Marrero

Estimadas familias,
