Developing English Literacy Skills
As the ELL teacher at the Peabody School, I work with students who are learning to listen, speak, read and write in English as a second language. As a parent you can help your child at home by speaking, reading and writing with your child in your native language. Developing your child’s literacy skills in his/her native language will enable your child to have stronger literacy skills in English. Hear more >>

Update from Ms. Ingram
On Monday, March 28th grade 3-5 students were treated to a special in-school performance by the Handel and Haydn Vocal Quartet , with pianist! The quartet presented the program “Voices of America!” This interactive program uses live music, theater, and dialogue to explore the connections between the history of the United States, the emergence of classical music in American culture, and the development of American musical styles. We prepared for this performance with in-depth guided listening in the classroom.

The program began with a bit of history of Handel and Haydn society, as well as its connections to Boston. Did you know that the Handel and Haydn society is the oldest music organization in America, and that it was founded just across the river, in Boston? Last year the organization celebrated its 200th anniversary!

Many of the pieces presented had a strong connection to the Boston area. Modern Music, by Boston’s own William Billings, is a comedic piece for vocal quartet written in the late 1700s. If you go to Boston Common, you can find a plaque commemorating Mr. Billings, who was also known as the “Father of American Choral Music.” Former Handel and Haydn singer and composer Julia Ward Howe was represented in the program by the Battle Hymn of the Republic, written for the Civil War. And entering modern times, we were serenaded with America from “West Side Story,” written by the immensely talented local Leonard Bernstein!

We are so pleased to have been able to work with the Handel and Society to bring this program to our school free of charge! I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming Family Folk Dance Night and Spring Concert!

From The Friends of Peabody
For those of you who were able to respond to the recent survey re; on-line learning resources, thank you. The majority of parents who answered the survey found some beneficial use to these resources. Given the amount of requests for financial support the Friends of Peabody receives and recent requests that are larger and don’t reflect what we have funded in the past, this information provided an opportunity for an important policy discussion. Below please find a refined mission statement that we think reflects the resources and the funding and future goals of the organization. As always we thank you for your support! Our meetings are always open - the second Friday of each month at 7:30 a.m. in the school library. Special thanks to all the Room Parents and Front-office for their help in administering this survey.

Friends of Peabody (FoP) exists to enrich the educational experience of our students. Established by staff members in 1990, who then recruited parent volunteers, FoP is a charitable trust dedicated to supporting programs and activities that enhance the in-school learning environment. Through the generosity of donors and staff member and parent volunteers, FoP has supported curriculum-related activities that include field trips, cultural and literacy events, guest speakers, and supplies for special projects. Teachers and staff are invited to submit grant requests to FoP throughout the school year. FoP members review each request to ensure that the proposed activity or project provides an opportunity for meaningful connection between students and teachers or otherwise strengthens the school community.

A few examples of activities funded this year are Field trips to Alton Jones (5th Grade), Brooksby Farm (KG), Ballet (3rd Grade) and Literacy Events like Author visits.
