From the Superintendent: Take survey on school schedules

From the Superintendent: Take survey on school schedules
Posted on 11/28/2018

Dear CPS Community,

I hope that you enjoyed a happy Thanksgiving and restful break. As I mentioned last week, I would like to provide an update on our Quality Learning and Professional Time initiative. If you have not yet done so, I encourage you read the latest information posted on our website.

Among the resources you will find there is a summary of “Emerging Options” and the stakeholder feedback we have already received from educators, administrators, families, out-of-school-time partners, district leaders and the School Committee. We have learned a great deal thus far, and our study and design process continues.

Now, we’d like to capture more input from our community through this survey that will be open from Wednesday, November 28 through Friday, December 7, 2018:

Learning & Professional Time Survey

Please note: No significant changes to the length of the CRLS school day students are under consideration at this time. Based on stakeholder feedback, we know the developmental, educational, and scheduling issues at the high school level are different and need to be considered separately. We are not currently contemplating an extension of the school day for high school students nor an immediate change to the block schedule. Conversations with the high school community will continue in the coming months about a smaller set of questions applicable to the high school about professional time and improvements to the current use of time within the block schedule.

For those who would like to hear more, ask questions, and share your perspective in person, you are also invited to any of several school-based and community meetings:

  • December 5, 2018 at 6PM: Public Forum at Morse School
  • January 10, 2019 at 6PM: Public Forum at Kennedy-Longfellow School
  • January 12, 2019 at 10AM: Public Forum at Graham & Parks School

Childcare and a light meal will be provided at all sessions.

Please watch for a comprehensive list of meetings that will take place at individual schools. We will continue to update you as we move towards developing a proposal on improving learning and professional time in CPS. You can read extensive details of this process, including stakeholder feedback on the “emerging options” on our website.

I look forward to continuing this important process with you.

Sincerely,

Kenneth N. Salim, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
