Dear CPS Community:

Tonight at 7PM, a candlelight vigil will take place in front of Cambridge City Hall to remember the victims of Friday’s mass shooting at the Al Noor and Linwood Mosques in New Zealand.

Vigil - Details >>

Lighting a candle is a way to honor and pay tribute to those who have lost their lives. The vigil also offers a visual representation of our community’s commitment to standing in support of the Muslim community, affirming the value and dignity of every life, and standing against hate and senseless violence.

Although this tragedy occurred in a distant country, its impact has reverberated all around the world. We know that Islamophobia, anti-immigrant rhetoric, and white supremacist incidents have been on the rise, even here at home in Cambridge. Please know that CPS will not tolerate acts of bias or hate, and we are committing to promoting an atmosphere of respect for diversity and for religious freedom.

This incident has gained a lot of media attention, and you may be struggling with how to talk about it with your children. It may be helpful to review the advice of Riverside Trauma Center, Talking to Children about Traumatic Events. This, and many other helpful resources can be found at riversidetraumacenter.org.

To Muslim students, staff and families in CPS, please know that we stand with you. You matter to this community, and we will do our best to support you.

Sincerely,

Kenneth N. Salim, Superintendent
Cambridge Public Schools
