The
Chinese Immersion program includes children from a wide variety of
backgrounds. In addition to long-time Cambridge residents, families from
Belarus, China, Eritrea, Korea, Guatemala, and Europe have moved to our
great city and are taking advantage of this unique opportunity to learn
two languages and be immersed in at least two cultures.
On
September 12th, children in the Immersion Program had their first
Chinese cultural experience when they ate moon cakes to celebrate the
Mid-Autumn Festival. In addition, they listened to a famous story about
an old man, an archer, Lady Chang-e, and the rabbit on the moon. The
children learned to write Chinese characters relating to the moon, then
connected this activity to shapes and colors thereby complementing the
math and social studies curriculum. Throughout the year, children will
be learning Mandarin in the workshop model which will be coupled with
multidisciplinary thematic units to connect learning with real-life
experiences.
Thanks to the continued support of the Cambridge
Public Schools, the Cambridge community at large, and the wonderful
school-wide parent community, the King School is proud to be offering
this wonderful program preparing our children to become 21st-century
global citizens.
