COVID-19 Data Dashboard

The CPS COVID-19 Data Dashboard is intended to provide the community with transparent and updated information to determine the risk of COVID-19 transmission in CPS schools.

Data is reviewed daily by Cambridge Department of Public Health and CPS. The metrics used to inform decisionmaking will be reviewed on a regular basis to consider recommendations from scientific advisors based on emerging knowledge. The next planned updates are January 2021 and March 2021.

Metrics for Decisionmaking

For each metric below, see the definition, recommended threshold, and current status. If any metric surpasses recommended thresholds it will be displayed as orange. If two or more metrics exceed thresholds, metrics will be displayed as red and learning will shift to remote only.

Metric 1

Definition: 7-day average of new confirmed cases per day, per 100,000 people in Cambridge

Threshold:
Fewer than 25 new cases per day, per 100,000 people (7-day average)

Updated daily based on Cambridge Public Health department data.

Metric 2

Definition: Rate of positive COVID-19 tests in Cambridge (last 14 days)

Threshold: Less than 5% of COVID-19 tests are positive

Reported by the state weekly.

Metric 3

Definition: The level of COVID-19 found in sewage wastewater in MWRA

Threshold: COVID-19 in wastewater detected at less than 100 copies viral genomes/mL

Updated when new data is available from MWRA.

See below for more details and reporting schedule.

4. CPS COVID-19 Confirmed Cases

CPS has had 20 confirmed COVID-19 cases since schools opened on October 13, 2020 including 13 in-person staff and 7 in-person students.

There are currently 8 confirmed cases with the last one reported on November 22, 2020.

Schools/classrooms currently closed:

  • Amigos, whole school, returns 11/30
  • Peabody, 1 classroom, returns 11/30
  • CRLS, 3 classrooms, returns 11/30
  • CRLS, 2 classrooms, returns 12/7
  • Graham & Parks, 1 classroom, returns 12/7

This data is updated as necessary when cases are confirmed.

Coming Soon! CPS and the Cambridge Department of Public Health are collaborating to report more detailed case information.

5. CPS Staff COVID-19 Testing Participation Rates

In partnership with Cambridge Public Health Department (CPHD) and Broad Institute, CPS offers all employees working in-person voluntary, free COVID-19 testing twice per week. The data below provides an update on the percentage of eligible employees participating in the testing program.

About the calculation: The number of eligible staff used to calculate testing participation is an estimate, and will vary week to week with classroom closures, staff out of the building, and new hiring. Testing schedules may differ on weeks when school buildings are closed due to holidays.

Reporting source and schedule: Testing and participation data is provided by the CPHD. This data will be updated on Monday each week for testing participation the previous week.

Details

Metric 1: Fewer than 25 new cases per day, per 100,000 people (7-day average)
Explanation:

The Cambridge Public Health Department (CPHD) and Broad Institute, CPS offers all employees working in-person voluntary, free COVID-19 testing twice per week. The data below provides an update on the percentage of eligible employees participating in the testing program.

Confirmed cases per 100,000 residents is calculated by dividing the average number of newly reported confirmed cases over the last seven days by Cambridge's population size.

  • Cases are "confirmed" based on a positive result from a PCR test, which is the most reliable diagnostic test.
  • The seven-day period for this metric does not include the current date because newly confirmed cases may not be reported immediately.
  • The case count for this metric only includes confirmed cases and is normalized by population. Therefore, this metric cannot be directly compared to the New Cases chart elsewhere in this Data Center, which is not normalized by population and which includes confirmed, suspect, and probable cases.
  • The current population used to calculate is 118,927, based on data from the UMass Donahue Institute

Please note other Cambridge city data reporting Daily New Cases includes confirmed, suspect, and probable cases.

Metric 2: Positivity Rate
Explanation:
As the incidence of COVID-19 goes up in a community, the rate of positive tests will go up. If the rate of positive tests gets too high, this may indicate that not enough testing is taking place. That is, if testing capacity is not keeping up with demand, cases may go undetected. Indicator 2 therefore underscores the accuracy of indicator 1.

Metric 3: Wastewater Monitoring
Explanation: CPS will monitor the level of COVID-19 found in sewage wastewater. MWRA serves 61 communities in the Greater Boston area. Three samples are collected at the Deer Island treatment plant for laboratory testing, looking for genetic material from the virus that is excreted in feces.

While this method for measuring prevalence is still being studied, it provides a more comprehensive view of prevalence because sewage represents samples from every resident. Metric will be updated to reflect local wastewater monitoring data when it becomes available.
