The
Massachusetts Seal of Biliteracy is a major initiative of the CRLS World Language and ELL Departments. The Seal is recorded on final student transcripts at graduation and is meant to set a new standard as a nationally recognized definition of what it means to be fluent in another language. The vast majority of our CRLS seniors who receive the Seal have qualified through a combination of their MCAS ELA score and also their
Advanced Placement or ACTFL Assessment of Performance Towards Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) score. Since proficiency is based on hours of instruction, most CRLS World Language students pursue the Seal during their junior year or fall of their senior year. Each year, some freshman and sophomore students achieve the Seal of Biliteracy. Often these students speak another language at home or they may have attended an immersion school.
