“Wheel Your Way” Campaign Encourages Cambridge Families to Choose Breakfast at School

Food ServicesTo encourage more families to take advantage of the healthy choices available for school breakfast, Cambridge Public Schools will celebrate National School Breakfast Week during March 4-8, 2019.

Busy weekday mornings make it a challenge for many families to find time for a healthy breakfast. However, US Department of Agriculture data show that more and more students are starting their day with a nutritious breakfast in their school cafeterias. The USDA School Breakfast Program currently serves 14 million students every day. Studies show that students who eat school breakfast are more likely to:

  • Reach higher levels of achievement in reading and math
  • Score higher on standardized tests
  • Have better concentration and memory
  • Be more alert
  • Maintain a healthy weight

BreakfastThe National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) campaign theme for Cambridge, “Wheel Your Way,” reminds the entire school community that school breakfast provides a healthy and energizing way to pedal up for the day. Students will be encouraged to show their enthusiasm for “Wheel Your Way” from March 4-8 with special menus, cafeteria events, and more. Daily bicycle trading cards will be distributed by the cashiers featuring CPS community members, along with a celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, and bicycle-themed giveaways during the week. A unique menu will be featured, and parents will be invited to join in on a special day.

“National School Breakfast Week emphasizes the importance of being well nourished so students can get the most of their education each day”, said Mellissa Honeywood, Director of Food & Nutrition Services. The district serves over 1,000 breakfast meals daily through the federally funded School Breakfast Program. School nutrition professionals in Cambridge prepare breakfast and lunches every day that meet federal nutrition standards – limiting fat, calories and sodium – while encouraging students to choose from the fruits, vegetables and whole grains offered with school meals.”

A special breakfast menu will be presented for the elementary and upper schools, featuring a ham and egg sandwich celebrating Read Across America Day, pancakes with parents, a waffle bar, whole grain breakfast pizza, and cinnamon apple oatmeal. The Fletcher Maynard Academy will have a menu designed for their successful Breakfast in the Classroom program.
