Entering public school is an exciting milestone in a young child’s life. We know it must be challenging to think about how to help your child get ready, especially in the current context. Even though school buildings are closed, learning and connection continues in CPS.

You probably have questions about what school will be like when it becomes safe to open our school buildings. While we don’t have all of the specifics of what school will look like in the Fall, planning is underway. We will continue to keep the community informed along the way. Some key points:

  • Health and Safety: We are in constant communication with state and local health and education officials, who provide the latest information and guidance for keeping schools and communities safe. We will continue to be cautious and careful in our decision-making as we plan for the reopening of school.

  • Looking Ahead: CPS is planning for many possible changes to how schools operate next school year. Many things might change, including daily schedules, the calendar, bus routes, and school meal programs, and technology plans.

  • Communication with You: Your school will reach out soon and you will start receiving school and district newsletters over the summer. There will be forms to fill out, and teachers will introduce themselves closer to the first day of school. As this changes, we will try to keep surprises to a minimum so you feel confident and prepared for your child’s first day. You can also stay updated through our website and visit Find It! Cambridge for more resources.

Despite all the uncertainty, we do know that your child’s teachers are really looking forward to meeting them. We wish we could announce specific activities for visiting the school or meeting other children and families, but those decisions will depend on how the current public health emergency unfolds. Whatever form they take, we will do our best to make sure you feel welcome.

We are so happy that your child and family will be joining the CPS community next school year. We are all doing our best to take care of ourselves and one another -- and we hope that you are doing the same. I look forward to meeting you in person soon.

Sincerely,

Kenneth N. Salim, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
