Grade 6 Math
In Grade 6, instructional time should focus on four critical areas:
- connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division, and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems;
- completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers;
- writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and
- developing understanding of statistical thinking.

Supporting Your Child in 6th Grade Math
The Council of the Great City Schools has created Parent Roadmaps to provide guidance to parents about what their child will be learning in Mathematics and how they can support that learning. These parent roadmaps also provide three-year snapshots showing how selected standards progress from year to year:

Standards for Mathematical Practice
The 2011 framework introduces Standards for Mathematical Practice. These standards complement the content standards so that students increasingly engage with the subject matter as they grow in mathematical maturity and expertise throughout the elementary, middle, and high school years. These standards are the same at all grades from Prekindergarten to 12th grade.
An explanation of how the standards can be highlighted in Grade 6 can be found here.
These eight practices can be clustered into the following categories as shown in the chart below:

Content Standards to be covered in Grade 6
The focus of instruction in Grade 6 is determined by the Massachusetts 2011 Mathematics Curriculum Framework, which can be found on the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's website.
